According to Yuanta Securities Co., Apple’s iPad 2 may not hit the market until June. With the usual caveat of analysts beings only slightly less accurate than a coin toss, and the clarification that unannounced products can only be “delayed” when it comes to internal time tables, Yuanta cites the reason for the delay as “production bottlenecks” due to Apple making some design changes shortly before the Chinese New Year.
This delay would obviously affect Apple’s typical refresh cycle of releasing mobile products once a year. Interestingly enough we told you that WWDC 2011 is scheduled for June 5-9, which would place the iPad 2 launch just prior to or right after Apple’s yearly event where iPhone 5 should be announced.
What do you think of this rumor, real, fake or really fake?

The U.S. Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission are starting to look into Apple’s new subscription service. Right now “looking into” the matter is as far as it goes and it may not ever develop into a formal investigation or any actions against Apple. The European Commission is also carefully monitoring the situation as well.
The Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission are looking to see if Apple’s new subscription service is in violation of any U.S. antitrust laws since it appears as if it is forcing the media companies’ customers into using iTunes as a payment service thus giving Apple a 30 percent profit cut for themselves. The other issue is that the publishers will not have the ability to link to outside sources for users to get their content and will also not be able to have different prices amongst the different sources for their content which could definitely pose antitrust problems for Apple.
Several executives from music streaming services have already commented stating the royalties they already pay to labels for their music and now having to pay Apple 30 percent for any subscriptions they sell is making for an anti-competitive environment and a poor business model. The problem there is that Apple only has a small portion of market share indicating that they are not the leader of an industry. The other issue is trying to figure out what percent would be appropriate as that can vary and can also become rather complex and authorities are not price regulators.
All-in-all Apple has stirred things up with their new policies and it doesn’t appear as if things will be simmering down any time in the near future. Apple has had issues in the past and ended up taking a step back as to not get further heat from authorities so it will be interesting to see if Apple sticks to their guns on this or if this look into their new service makes them take a step back and relax a little on their policy.

Sony has officially launched it’s own music streaming service called Music Unlimited, powered by Qriocity, and available now in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. Their aim is to challenge Apple’s iTunes dominance by providing a service that is available across a myriad of devices such as Playstation 3, Blu-Ray players, Bravia televisions and computers. They also plan on adding an app for Google’s Android operating system so they can get into the smartphone scene as well. The pricing will start at as low as $3.99 per month and they plan on rolling it out to more countries this year.
Interestingly enough they are said to also be supporting iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad sometime this year as well. The only problem for them in that regard could be the new 30% cut Apple would require based on their new App Store developer guidelines and subscription service.
We also told you last week that Sony was not happy with Apple and had plans of possibly pulling all of their content from iTunes all together. Well Sony Network Entertainment COO (also involved with Music Unlimited service), Shawn Layden says otherwise.
Sony Music as I understand it has no intention of withdrawing from iTunes, they’re one of our biggest partners in the digital domain. I think those words were either taken out of context or the person who spoke them was unclear on the circumstances.
So so you want Music Unlimited on your iOS device or is iTunes the better way for you to have access to music? Tell us your thoughts on Sony’s new service!

Coming from another platform where you’re used to the Gmail app on Android or the instant push of BlackBerry mail and curious how to get that on your iPhone? Well good news — Google licensed Exchange ActiveSync from Microsoft and offers Google Sync for iPhone (and other devices). So if you set up your Gmail (or Google Account) as an Exchange account you get push email, calendars, and contacts. We’ll show you how after the break!
Setting up Gmail as Exchange/Google Sync is easy provided you ignore that giant Gmail button on the mail account screen and choose Exchange instead. Here are the steps:
- Launch the Settings app.
- Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
- Tap Add Account.
- Tap Microsoft Exchange.
- For Email, enter your full Gmail or Google Account email address (i.e. name@gmail.com or name@mygoogleaccountdomain.com).
- Leave the Domain field blank. (Really.)
- Again, enter your Gmail or Google Account email address as the Username. (Yup, that’s twice.)
- Enter your Gmail/Google Account password for Password.
- Tap Next.
- When the Server field appears, enter m.google.com.
- Tap Next.
- Select what you want to sync (Mail, Calendar, and Contacts).
WARNING: Your iPhone will ask if you want to delete all existing data and replace it with Google data, or merge the two. What you choose depends on how you store your data. If everything is in the Google Cloud, choose replace. If you have a mix of data from, for example, Outlook as well, choose merge.

Warner Brothers today released two of their movies, Dark Knight and Inception, as applications in the App Store and is available in 35 different countries. (The interesting thing to note is that 23 of those countries are unable to get these two movies through iTunes.) The apps are free and they come ready to go with a five minute preview of each film along with games, trivia, extras and other materials for users to enjoy. If you decide you want to watch the movie you have two options at that point. You can choose to stream the movie or download it to your device to watch at a later time. Dark Knight is currently available for $9.99 and Inception is available for $11.99. Thomas Gewecke, president of digital distribution made a short comment about their new “apps.”
We think this is an innovative way to build a global footprint on devices that are optimized for video viewing.
Yes it is definitely an innovative way to allow countries without iTunes movie access to have a chance at getting these movies but is it against Apple’s new App Store developer guidelines? Specifically they say that apps that are for media should be sent to iTunes and not the App Store. So who knows if these two movies will make it as apps for long but if they do this opens up a whole new way to get movies on your iOS devices. Will you be downloading these movies as apps? Do you like the idea of downloading movies as apps instead of the standard way from iTunes? Tell us what you think in our comments section.

If you launch iBooks on a Jailbroken iPhone there’s a good chance you’ll get an error message and not be able to open any of your legitimately purchased iBooks content. This is NOT a new problem — many of us here at TiPb have been having this issue for a while and with older versions of iBooks. Some thought it was a bug with iBooks or an issue with certain releases of redsn0w or greenpois0n Jailbreak tools, but iPhone dev-team member @comex finally figured out what was causing it.
It seems that before opening a DRMed book, iBooks drops an improperly signed binary, tries to execute it, and if it works concludes that the device is jailbroken and refuses to open the book.
This is what the binary does:
int main() {
return 42;
}
The complete message you get is:
There is a problem with the configuration of your iPhone. Please restore with iTunes and reinstall iBooks.
If you do restore your iPhone you will, of course, lose your Jailbreak. If you’re an avid iBooks user and can’t live it without it that’s a choice you’ll have to make. Why Apple is only choosing to do this with iBooks and not other iTunes content, like media and apps is unknown.
Again, this is not a new problem but with iOS 4.2.1 getting an untethered Jailbreak courtesy of greenpois0n (and iOS 4.2.6 for the Verizon iPhone), it’s probably something more and more people have noticed and been complaining about. Hopefully the Jailbreak community comes up with a fix, otherwise Apple and iBooks might lose a lot of #TeamJailbreak customers to Amazon’s Kindle store…
Have you had trouble using iBooks on your Jailbroken iPhone? Does it bother you enough that you’ll restore or just stop using iBooks?

Mobile World Congress 2011 has brought a couple of Android tablets — LG Optimus Pad, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2– and slew of Android and Windows phones — LG Optimus 3D, Sony Xperia Play and Xperia Pro, and Samsung Omnia 7 — but a quick look at the blogsphere shows an awful lot of headlines about iPad 2, iPad 3, and iPhone nano — products that don’t (yet) exist from Apple, a company not even at the show.
Last year Apple was the talk of MWC after their iPad announcement, and 2009 they got the buzz following the success of Apple’s App Store. How does one company who doesn’t even attend MWC still manage to hijack so much press?
Rene joked on Twitter yesterday that the iPad 3 and iPhone nano leaks, coming right at the start of MWC, was remarkable timing. Could it also be remarkable, and remarkably effective strategy on Apple’s part to keep their competitors on their heels? Do you think the rumors warrant all the buzz they are drawing at MWC 2011?

It appears as if Sony is at war with Apple and is threatening to pull its music from iTunes and their games from the App Store as well. Sony has plans on opening their own version of iTunes, an online streaming service called Music Unlimited, and a service that will bring Playstation titles to mobile platforms starting with Android.
Perhaps Sony is not happy about having their reader app rejected by Apple and is taking their frustration out on the end users? Or perhaps Sony just wants a piece of the enormous pie that is mobile downloadings including music and apps. Sony’s CEO, Michael Ephraim, had the following to say about Apple and iTunes.
If we do [get mass take up] then does Sony Music need to provide content to iTunes? Currently we do. We have to provide it to iTunes as that’s the format right now.
Publishers are being held to ransom by Apple and they are looking for other delivery systems, and we are waiting to see what the next three to five years will hold.
Strong words there. Mr. Ephraim also said their Music Unlimited service right now is planned for Sony’s mobile products and may or may not go to other platforms but we can assume that now we will not see it available for use on any iOS device.
So it appears as if Sony and Apple are starting into some unfriendly times and it will seemingly only hinder the consumer. What are your thoughts on Sony’s threats to pull its stuff from iTunes all together? Does it matter or is there already enough content that you won’t even notice their departure? Sound off below!

The Reagan Presidential Library and Museum has just undergone a $15 million dollar overhaul which includes the addition of an iPod touch for each person on a tour to utilize for audio of the tour as well as pictures and video while checking out the sights.
People who decide to take the tour starting today will be checked out their very own iPod touch and that will guide you through all the interesting things they have on display in the library and museum. The iPod will be the voice to explain what you are looking at as well as give background on items. Also users will be able to take photos and even video if they choose while they enjoy their tour. You are probably thinking what’s the point of taking photos and video on a device that isn’t your own to keep? Well they have an answer for that as well. Once you turn in your temporary iPod touch they will upload all your photos and video to a website and e-mail you to notify you that your media is ready to be viewed/downloaded or even shared to Facebook.
This seems like a pretty cool idea and definately would make the tour a little more interesting for the younger generations. If you take this tour let us know your thoughts on it and if not let us know if you would like this feature included in a tour that you enjoy taking.

Well folks the mythical and elusive white iPhone 4 is popping up yet again and this time as a shelf price at Best Buy. According to Engadget they received pictures from a Houston area Best Buy which shows a shelf price tag of $599.99 for an AT&T 16GB white iPhone 4 off-contract (same price as the black version).
The white iPhone 4 has been popping up in news a lot lately and it seems as if evidence of its arrival into users hands (hopefully soon) is getting stronger and stronger. A few NFL teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, might soon be joining the 21st century by adopting of iPads to replace their paper playbooks and game-day printouts. This could help keep some teams from using over 5,000 pieces of paper per game!
Not only would this help save some trees but think of the possibilities for the teams as well. No longer will they need to wait for a photo of a defense to be printed out — they can get those pictures wirelessly on their iPads with the ability to zoom in for details. Also maybe they could get video of a great play for the players to take a look at and see what worked for them. All of this would be live and in the moment with annimation and depth rather than printed on a piece of paper.
One thing halting the process as of now is teams aren’t exactly sure how secure the iPad really is. Yes they know it can be remotely wiped so if it was lost all their plays wouldn’t be public knowledge but they want to know no one will be able to gain remote access to their intellectual property (their plays). Other tablets could take the iPad’s place with the NFL if teams decide they are overall safer to use than the iPad so hopefully they figure it out or maybe Apple can help reassure them of their safety.
Would you like to see your favorite team sporting iPad’s on the sidelines or are you a traditional fan and think there isn’t a need for them on the sidelines?

Patently Apple got their hands on an Apple patent application that shows future iPads may just be designed with a built-in kickstand. iPads, and perhaps Cinema Displays, would have the ability to pivot to allow for use in landscape and portrait mode. Apple states that products with displays need a mechanism to support the object in multiple configurations. The patent also mentions the possible addition of a kickstand to other Apple products such as the iPhone.

It looks like our good friends over at 9 To 5 Mac and iFixYouri have managed to get their hands on what might just be an iPad 2 display fresh from the assembly lines in China. According to them, the display is lighter as well as just over a 1 mm thinner than the current generation iPad display. The frame around the screen is also noticeably smaller as well. This seems to make sense as all of Apple’s products have been getting smaller and thinner recently, and reducing the iPad’s weight would be a huge plus.
The part number (LP097X02-SLN1) appears to be an LG Phillips 9.7in XGA 1024×768 H-IPS display, which is the same resolution as the current iPad. This matches up with theories that it’s still too expensive to go to a 2x 2048×1536 Retina Display this year, and it’s a non-starter for developers to go 1.5x or anything in between.
Check out some candid shots of both displays after the break and let us know — would you be happy with this display in iPad 2?

It appears as if Netgear’s CEO is trying to back peddle his way out of those harsh words he had for Steve Jobs and Apple yesterday. In an email, Patrick Lo says he still feels the same towards Apple keeping iOS closed but says he does apologize for the remarks he made about Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs.
Hi. As many of you know I spoke in Sydney on Monday, at a lunch with more than a half dozen of Australia’s leading technology and business journalists. We covered a wide range of topics including the emergence of new IP protocols, cloud computing, wireless routers/repeaters in the home, the National Broadband Network (a current major Government project in Australia) and much more. During the course of the discussion, I shared my views about the future of Apple and Microsoft, as well as the surge of Android. Some of my comments were covered by the media who attended, and were reported more broadly outside Australia by media and bloggers who picked up on the story.
I stand by the opinions I stated on the business issues. Supporting open standards and environments in order to ease seamless networking integration of multimedia content is good for the consumer and good for content providers.
However, I deeply regret the choice of words I used in relation to business decisions Apple must grapple with in the future in relation to open vs. closed systems, which have been construed by some to be references to Steve Jobs’ health and which was never my intention. I sincerely apologize that what I said was interpreted this way, and I wish Steve only the very best.
Patrick Lo,
