The Avengers assemble on iPhone and iPad with three great apps to promote the next mighty Marvel movie!

The Avengers assemble on iPhone and iPad with three great apps to promote the next mighty Marvel movie!

Marvel has been hard at work getting preparations in place for what is, to some, one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer: The Avengers. Part of those plans include iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps designed to help promote the release, and available now in the iTunes App Store.

As expected, all of the apps are beautifully designed and are built to capture Avenger fans new and old, comic book and movie. In total, there are three apps to choose from thus far: Avengers Origins: Assemble and Avengers Origins: Hulk both, from Marvel’s parent company, Disney Publishing Worldwide, and Marvel’s The Avengers: Iron Man – Mark VII from Loud Crow Interactive. If you’re a Marvel fan, Avengers Fan, or simply an Iron-Man or Hulk fan, you’ll want to check them out.

Marvel’s The Avengers: Iron Man – Mark VII

Iron Man - Mark VII

If Iron Man happens to be your favorite Avenger, then the Iron Man – Mark VII app is the one you will be looking to download first. It’s an interactive comic book that is 15+ pages long and takes you through the design logs of Tony Stark, explaining how the Iron Man suit came to be, and how it’s evolved into what it will be in The Avengers movie. Embedded in the Iron Man app is music from the soundtracks to both the Iron Man and Iron Man II movies, plus you can opt to read the pages yourself or have them read to you.

The Iron Man app also features a sliding panel layout that reacts to tilt, touch, and even allows you to drag “pages” to flip through them. Almost everything you touch causes a reaction, making it fun to just tap or swipe random things to see what will happen. The artwork is great with it being done by Steve Kurth featuring a cover created by famous Iron Man artist Adi Granov. Iron Man fans may also recognize the writing by Fred Van Lente.

Although enjoyable, it feels like it could have been slightly more interactive in the long run. However; it is a free app and well worth the time if you’re an Iron Man fan of any age.

Avengers Origins: Hulk

Hulk

Avengers Origins: Hulk was built by Disney Publishing Worldwide and falls under the Marvel Storybook category. As the name indicates, it covers the origins of Hulk from his time as repressed, introverted Army scientist Bruce Banner to the moment the gamma bomb unleashed the monster within, to the present day. The Hulk app does so with a full-on interactive reading experience with optional narration by Stan “The Man” Lee himself (who does not let fans down).

For younger readers, the Hulk app includes an auto-turn function so that the story moves along in a timely fashion. It’s filled with great artwork, music, sounds and mini-games. Overall, it offers a great look at the background of Hulk. Unlike Iron Man: Mark VII, however, Avengers Origins: Hulk is a paid app and does cost $1.99 in the iTunes App Store.

$1.99 – Download Now

Avenger Origins: Assemble

The Avengers assemble on iPhone and iPad with three great apps to promote the next mighty Marvel movie!

Save the best for last as some folks say. If you’re looking for the full Avengers package then Avengers Origins: Assemble is ready and waiting. Like the Avengers Origins: Hulk, it’s a reading book once again narrated by Stan Lee. It features all the same reading modes and interactivity options but is jammed full of Avengers goodness.

In a way, it picks up where the Captain America movie itself left off (and the classic Avengers series started!) with Captain America being thawed out of a frozen slumber to find himself a man out of time. Now Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and The Wasp need his help to defend Earth against all evil. The real question is, will he be willing to help? With hidden items throughout and again those mini-game like sequences built in, if you’re looking for a full on Avengers experience — this is the one to grab.

Instagram for Android vs. Instagram for iPhone: Can you see the difference?

Can you see the difference?

Instagram’s developers hinted their new Android app might be better than their existing iPhone app. So is it, and if so, how?

While over 15 Million iPhone users have enjoyed the social photo sharing app, Instagram, for quite some time, just today Instagram for Android hit the Google Play Store. Over 430,000 Android users had registered to be notified about the app’s release, and the developers even hinted it might back a few features iPhone users were without. So does it?

First off, a few tabs look a little different between the Android and iPhone versions of Instagram, and the layout has been adopted to fit the Android screen format, but noticeably missing are the tilt shift and circle blur options. Some social features are missing as well, namely Flickr and Posterous.

There has been some reports of the Android version being slower than that of the iPhone version but, realistically that all depends on which Android device and which version of the Android OS it’s being run on. For what it’s worth, Instagram on Android is optimized to run best on Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich builds, but it will run on anything Android 2.2 and above, though results may vary. Although there have been some compatibility problems, Instagram for Android has already been updated to address a few of them, though not the HTC One X.

Overall, the Instgram team did a great job of keeping mostly everything intact for their new found Android base and it will no doubt, become one of the top download in the Google Play Store despite the fact that Google and various other Android OEM’s have been adding built-in filtering options to the Android camera application for quite some time now.

So what exactly were/are those features that would make the Android version of Instagram better than the iPhone version? No idea. The feature that makes both versions better is finally having a bigger device footprint for instapaper — iPhone and Android users can share and like and comment on way more photos by way more mobile photographers than ever before. And that’s a win for both platforms!

Gannet arms their print and broadcast journalists with iPhones and iPads

Avid Studio for iPad Hero Shot

Back in December, 2011, Gannett armed their print and broadcast journalists with iPhones and iPads. Now, with over 1,000 iOS devices now in the hands of their print and broadcast journalists, they’re combining traditional broadcast equipment with some of the best in mobile technology. At this point, the iPhones and iPads have become an essential requirement in the day-today operations throughout the Gannett organization.

“Reporters and photographers need to collect and record things, do some rudimentary editing and transmit that content. This one device can accomplish some or all of those critical steps,” says Gannett’s Director of Digital Content MacKenzie Warren.
The iTunes App Store plays a significant role here as well with Gannett making use of such applications as Apple’s iMovie, the more robust Splice and even working with Qik to offer viewers a multi-stream broadcast during a recent Florida State-Duke basketball game. This is all in addition to using various other tools available to publishers such as Brightcove’s mobile upload service that allows for raw or edited footage directly to Brightcove servers and then directly to viewers.

iPhone and iPad accessories play a big role for Gannett as well. With plenty of iOS device accessories out there to make use of, they have no trouble finding additional tools that help the print and broadcast journalists in whatever circumstances they may come across. Be it the need to get a POV shot from a car or bicycle and as noted by Patti Dennis, VP of news at Gannet’s KUSA Denver “the story dictates the tool,” and that could mean anything from using a tripod mount to the widely used mCam, made out of aluminum and acts as a mount but also offers a wide-angle/macro lens as well as a microphone for recording audio.

Looking at the Gannett situation a bit, it’s easy to see how Apple devices are changing how news is brought to the masses. The next time you’re watching the news, those photos, those videos could essentially be coming to you from not only an iOS device but after having been recorded, edited and even uploaded to a server somewhere directly from one. The traditional tools are of course still playing a big role in the day-to-day operations but the landscape has changed now all thanks to Apple.
