iPad, iPhone enabling employees to surf porn at work?

Posted on July 6, 2011 by Cody Allison.

Are the iPhone and iPad letting employees sneak a peek at porn while on the job? Recently, Harris interactive was commissioned by video surveillance company Qumu to survey 2,500 employees and ask them, “what do you search on your mobile device at work that you cannot do, or are afraid to do, from your work computer?” These are some of their top responses:

  1. Look for another primary job
  2. Watch pornography
  3. Visit an online dating website
  4. Research an STD

Harris also asked how employees sneaked a peek at their mobile devices while at work, and the most popular answers were:

  1. Hiding their mobile device under the table
  2. Excusing themselves to go to the restroom
  3. Hiding their mobile device in their folders/notebooks/papers
  4. Pretending to tie their shoes
  5. Creating a distraction

While the results seem amusing, this is part of a growing trend affecting the workplace. A majority of Americans believe they should bring their own mobile devices to work to watch videos. This fits in the larger trend of a majority of Americans using more than one computing devices weekly, with 15% using 4 or more devices a week!

Obviously, Qumu’s intent is to generate interest in their video solution, but it’s not hard to imagine that democratized, popularized, ubiquitous internet connectivity will provide as many challenges for business as it does opportunities for individuals. Be that quickly scanning email at home, or the nudie-pic-of-the-day at work.

Former Apple design guru crafted Google+, will that get iOS users use it?

Wondering why Google+ looks, well, uncharacteristically good for a Google product? Turn out Andy Hertzfeld, an former Apple design guru going back to the days of the original Mac, has been given the freedom to exercise his creative genius on the new Google+ project. No wonder it has such a simple, useful — dare we say elegant — look and feel to it.

Hertzfeld credits some of his work done on the project to Apple, saying that Apple’s reign on the mobile industry may have had “A little bit to do” with his creative design into the project of Google+.

Does knowing that a famous former Apple designer had a big hand in how Google+ looks and works make you any more likely to try it out?

Jailbreakme.com updated, been far too long working on iPad 2 Jailbreak?

Comex’s Jailbreakme.com site has been updated again with yet another image that shows a list of commits along with an overlay saying:

“It’s been far too long.”

The commits go back almost a year, which is certainly a long time. Whether or not this signifies any progress on the long-anticipated iPad 2 Jailbreak is unknown. Jailbreakme.com was last active during the early days of iOS 4, when a PDF exploit allowed an easy, over-the-web Jailbreak unseen since the early days of iOS 1. The site was recently updated with another cryptic image, so hopefully something is afoot…

Verizon iPhone slowing Android growth, could iPhone 5 stop it?

Posted on June 24, 2011 by Cody Allison.

TiPb.com vs. Angry Droids

With the release of the iPhone on the Verizon network just a few months ago, analyst reports are saying it might just have slowed the previously runaway Android market growth. TechCrunch is even conjecturing the upcoming iPhone 5 could stop or even reverse it completely.

For much of last year iPhone was tied to one US carrier, AT&T. Now it’s on AT&T and Verizon, but it’s still essentially one device (though AT&T still has the bargain-priced iPhone 3GS), made by one manufacturer. Usually that one device is on a once-a-year cycle, but this year it might be closer to 15 months. Android on the other hand is on every network, and has hundreds of devices with new releases every few weeks. Given the greater carrier footprint and greater choice in models, all Android devices together should absolutely be outselling the 1 or 2 iPhones on 2 carriers in the US.

However, reports from NPD from April say that the iPhone market grew while Android’s declined. About a month later, Nielsen said Android was indeed leveling off. Just a few days ago Needham was reporting from the use of IDC data that Android’s share of the market hit its peak in March and is now declining, where Apple’s share is once again on the rise. This is the first quarterly decrease that Android has ever seen. Yesterday, BTIG released a report saying iPhone is outselling Android in the majority of US AT&T and Verizon stores. And Verizon reported it had sold 2.2 million iPhones on its network in just two months.

That’s probably not a coincidence. The Verizon iPhone could just be the reason the Android market is leveling off and, in some reports, declining. With iPhone 5 on the way, and the usually media and hype cycles that surround it, it’s not unreasonable to think Apple can keep that momentum going. Add rumors of T-Mobile, perhaps even Sprint support in the future, and it gets very interesting very fast.

What do you think, will Android kick it back into gear and keep growing, or does Apple have a real chance to take the lead here?

TiPb checks out the best, most must-have camera apps to make the most out of your iPhone photography

Top 5 camera apps for iPhone

iPhone is the best camera since its the one you have with you, but what’s the best, most must-have camera app to take your photos with? Some are instant, some are clean, some have filters, some are just for fun. Whether it’s for tourism, for art, or for those special family moments, the choices are almost endless.

That’s where TiPb comes in. Read on for our top 5 favorite, most recommended photo apps for iPhone!

Camera

Ok, let’s face it, the stock camera app on the iPhone has gotten a lot better over the past two years with the new features of auto focus, tap to focus, and HDR. And with iOS 5 it’s poised to get even better. Quick launch from the lock screen, volume button as a shutter, grid lines, basic image editing including rotate, auto enhance, and crop, the list is getting longer and longer.

It’s still not perfect, still doesn’t offer filters, panoramas, or higher level editing, but it’s solid and it looks like Apple is putting time into it.

Camera+

Camera+ offers up to 6 times zoom, a stabilizer, a timer, a burst option, the use of iPhone 4′s LED flash, and the option to use both the front and rear facing camera. The picture quality is better than that of the stock camera app, and for only $0.99 it is definitely worth the purchase. In addition filters hand picked by Lisa Bettany, Camera+ also makes sure all the pictures you take get saved into the app itself, it does not automatically save them to the camera roll. In the options menu, it allows you to pick and choose which pictures you want to save to your camera roll. It also allows you to share pictures to Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, SMS, or email. The app also allows you to copy and paste pictures you have taken.

[$0.99 - iTunes link]

ProCamera

ProCamera brings a lot of precise settings to the iPhone, which is nice for the experienced photographer. It has anti-shake, which is nice for those of us who can’t seem to hold still while taking a picture! It also has a timer, a grid option, a video camera option, the option for full resolution when in zoom, and auto horizontal calibration.

It does not have the option to share pictures from the app, or to pick and choose which pictures you want to save to your camera roll, but the other features it offers makes up for it in the long run.

[$2.99 - iTunes Link]

Quickpix

Quickpix has its own zoom built into the application, as well as support for the iPhone LED flash. It also has a really cool feature which allows you to take video and shoot pictures at the same time. This is really handy for events where you want the video but would also like a few snap shots, or if you’re not sure what you want to take and would rather have the capture streaming, ready for anything.

[$0.99 - iTunes link]

Instagram

Instagram is what all the cool kids are using to take pictures, apply filters, and share photos with friends and social networks such as twitter and Facebook. Instagram has tap to focus, zoom, and makes use of the iPhone 4 LED light. The coolest thing about Instagram, however, is the use of filters. Take a picture using the Instagram app and go into your settings options, you have the option to edit the photo and apply effects right from the app.

Verizon dropping unlimited data plans next month

Posted on June 21, 2011 by Cody Allison.
Categories: Uncategorized.

According to All Things Digital, a Verizon spokesperson has said that they will be dropping its their Unlimited data plan option in July.

We will move to a more usage based model in July. We’ll share more later.

Verizon will be switching to a tiered data option for smart phone users on their network, and according to the source, the data caps and prices will be as follows,

  • 2GB – $30/month
  • 5GB – $50/month
  • 10GB – $80/month

  • Tethering is a $20/month add-on and includes an additional 2GB of data.

  • Overages are assessed at $10/GB.

AT&T dropped their unlimited data plans last summer and switched to a tiered system, but allowed customers to stay “grandfathered” into their unlimited data plans (without the option to tether). Whether or not Verizon follows suit allow their existing users with unlimited plans to keep them, we don’t know yet.

If you’re on Verizon, what do you think of these new plans? If you’re not on Verizon, are you tempted to switch now before unlimited goes away?

iOS 5 Features: Nitro Javascript engine comes to UIWebView, WebClips

Nitro Javascript engine comes to UIWebView, WebClips

According to a poster Hacker News, the Nitro JavaScript engine brought to iOS 4.3′s Safari browser, is now available to embedded UIWebViews and home screen WebClips in iOS 5. Apple originally claimed the Nitro engine, ported from desktop Safari, would make iOS Safari 2x faster, but due to restrictions on code interpretation (Nitro uses JIT, or Just-in-Time compilation), it was only available in the Safari sandbox. This effectively made web pages embed in apps and saved to the home screen feel twice as slow. No longer, according to this thread:

Q: Did they fix the bug from 4.3 where home screen web apps don’t use Nitro?

A: This is probably breaking my NDA to say this, but yes, they did. Web.app now has the “dynamic-codesigning” entitlement, which enables Nitro.

In other words, embed webpages and home screen web apps just became first class citizens, and should have the speed to prove it.

Daily Tip: How to save photos from Facebook for iPhone

Facebook status updates not entering live feed, iPhone privacy settings missing

Driving yourself nuts trying to figure out how to take photos from the Facebook for iPhone app? Don’t worry, it’s not you, it’s them. Unlike iOS, you just can’t tap, hold and select Save Image from a pop up. That functionality just doesn’t come with the Facebook app. But don’t worry, we have a work around and we’re going to share it with you, after the jump.

Here’s how to quickly and easily save photos from Facebook to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad camera roll.

  1. Launch the Facebook app.
  2. Go to the picture you would like to have saved to your iPhone.
  3. Press and hold the Home button and then quickly press the Sleep/Wake button. (Yes, you’re taking a screenshot!)
  4. Now, go to your Camera Roll and you will find the image that you just saved.

Why this feature was not built into the app originally, I am not sure, but this is a quick and easy way to get all the pictures you want off of the Facebook app.

iOS 5 features: Use your headset with remote as a camera shutter release

Posted on by Cody Allison.
Categories: Uncategorized.

When Apple announced that iOS 5 would let you snap pictures with the volume up button, it was only a matter of time before some enterprising developers discovered the ability to use a headset equipped with volume remote control as a camera shutter release.

Using the stock Apple headphones that come with your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, you simply:

  1. Open the Camera app
  2. Click the volume up remote to release the shutter
  3. Enjoy your long distance picture taking power

So camera enthusiasts, is this a big deal for you or just a nice to have? Will it change the way you take pictures with your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad?

Nokia Vs. Apple lawsuit settled: Apple pays.

Posted on June 14, 2011 by Cody Allison.
Categories: Uncategorized.

It looks as though Nokia and Apple have finally come to an agreement over the lawsuit they have been involved in since late 2009, with Apple agreeing to pay licensing fees for key Nokia patents. Originally, Nokia claimed that Apple had infringed on almost two dozen of their patents for mobile technologies. Apple argued that Nokia was demanding “unfair” licensing fees and didn’t want to pay more than other companies licensing the same technology, then counter sued for UI and computer-related patents. Complaints flew back and forth, and now the end result of the lawsuit was that Apple has to pay Nokia a lump some of of cash on top of royalties for the term of the agreement with Nokia.

The financial structure of the agreement consists of a one-time payment payable by Apple and on-going royalties to be paid by Apple to Nokia for the term of the agreement. The specific terms of the contract are confidential.

“We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees,” said Stephen Elop, president and chief executive officer of Nokia. “This settlement demonstrates Nokia’s industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.”

Apple having to pay Nokia was never really in question. The argument was over how much. Nokia’s patents were in a pool that was supposed to be freely and fairly licensed to everyone. Apple felt Nokia was violating the letter and spirit of that by asking more of Apple. Whether or not Apple eventually got the same terms as other licensees, or whether they did have to pay up more, is still a question.

Apple also remains in litigation with the three top Android makers, HTC, Samsung, and Motorola. For now, Nokia is no longer in litigation with anyone.

iOS 5 to bring FaceTime over 3G?

Posted on by Cody Allison.
Categories: Uncategorized.

MacRumors received this screenshot from an anonymous reader today stating that it looks like Apple is preparing to take FaceTime over the carrier frequencies. It will probably be limited to 3G only, and not Edge. This is all speculation of course.

Unless you are apart of the jailbreak community, you are limited to FaceTime over wifi only, but if you jailbreak your device you are able to FaceTime over 3G via the MiFi app from Cydia.

Apparently it will be up to the carriers to allow or disallow it. What do you think, will AT&T and Verizon say yay or nay?

iOS 5 jailbroken in less than 24 hours

Posted on June 7, 2011 by Cody Allison.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Last night Musclenerd posted a tweet saying that iOS 5 has indeed been jailbroken using the limera1n exploit. In his tweet he posted a picture of an iPod touch 4 Springboard with the Cydia icon placed nicely on it.

The full jailbreak story after the break!

The Apple keynote ended less than 24 hours ago, and the iOS 5 beta dropped to developers in even less time and the devs have already managed to jailbreak the firmware. According to @musclenerd, Cydia runs smoothly. This, however, is a tethered jailbreak and there is no word on when the tool will be released. So, if you are already jailbroken on a previous firmware, stay there, do not upgrade to iOS 5 beta 1 if you like your current jailbreak.

What do you all think of this? The jailbreak came quick, but do you think Apple will fill the hole in a new beta of iOS 5? Let us know in the comments.

The future of Lockinfo [jailbreak]

Posted on June 6, 2011 by Cody Allison.
Categories: Uncategorized.

David Ashman is a well known jailbreak app writer with his Lockinfo package from Cydia. Almost everyone who jailbreaks has, or has heard of, Lockinfo. He attended the WWDC keynote today, and to say the least, he feels ripped off.

Apple finally figured out that you need to do more than show a big blue popup on the lockscreen to provide users with useful information. What they added is a direct rip off of Peter Hajas’ MobileNotifier (at least he got hired by Apple). But what is it missing (at least based on early views… I’ll admit I don’t have the developer seed yet):

No emails on the lockscreen. (Redacted… screenshot shows it)
No quick previews.
No direct replies via integrations with other apps.
No status bar icons.
No plugin API.
No weather (on the lockscreen).
No RSS feeds.
No Twitter integration.
No Facebook integration (coming soon).
No favorites quick dial/text/facetime.

He goes on to say that Apple did make it look pretty, but it’s still lacking some of the major conveniences that he, himself, has implemented into his own jailbreak package, such as quick previews, direct replies, and drop down lists.

These are just a few of the things he has posted in his latest blog. He says he will continue to develop for Lockinfo and keep pushing out updates. To read his entire blog post, hit the link at the bottom of the post.

What do you think of Ashman’s comments? Do you think he is valid in stating this? Do you feel as though Apple ripped off his idea? Let us know in the comments.

iOS 5: software updates will now be delivered OTA (over-the-air)

It looks as though Apple has decided to take all future software updates wireless and Apple will now stream all iOS updates over the air (OTA). This could be a great thing for folks who don’t want to depend on a computer to have to update their devices and even better if iCloud ends up bringing iTunes to you wirelessly.

Apple is “cutting the cord,” according to Forstall. New menus and a new Welcome screen will also be implemented into iOS 5 as well.

Are you excited about Apple cutting the cord on software updates or a little wary? How do you think this will effect the future of jailbreak?
