Camera Mic uses iPhone mic as shutter-release button

Can't seem to get just the right angle when taking a picture with your iPhone? Then you may want to check out Camera Mic, which turns the microphone on your iPhone or on your headset cable into a shutter-release button. Brought to our attention by Lifehacker, Camera Mic snaps a picture any time you tap the microphone -- or possibly even when it hears a loud noise nearby, which of course could lead to a full library of forgettable photos to sort through.

But even with the potential to take pictures when you don't mean to, I could see this app coming in especially useful for those of us without forward-facing cameras. When we want to take a group shot that actually includes us, we have to turn the camera around and hope we can hit the shutter button. The ability to just tap the headset cable could make it much easier to take a photo worthwhile of being put somewhere other than in the trash.

Available in the App Store for just US$.99, Camera Mic is compatible with iOS 3.1 and later on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. (Maybe they mean iPad 2? Thanks @Victimsofgravity) Between the professional photographers using iPhones and reporters at The New York Times recording the news with theirs, the iPhone is sure showing its versatility in the photography world -- and an app like Camera Mic has the possibility of making it even more popular.

Walmart to carry Verizon iPhone in 600 stores starting February 10

Posted on by David Quilty.

Walmart has announced that beginning tomorrow, February 10, it will begin carrying the Verizon iPhone for sale in almost 600 of their retail stores. According to MacRumors, Walmart is the latest retailer to join Apple, Verizon, and Best Buy in offering up the the VZW iPhone 4 for sale, even if it is only going to be available inside a fraction of its 8,800 worldwide retail stores. However, with Walmart's reach you can be sure that the sales record Verizon set on the first day of iPhone sales of over 500,000 units will look like peanuts in the coming weeks.

While the iPhone is available for online orders starting today both at the Apple Store and at Verizon, retail sales at brick and mortar stores don't begin until tomorrow.

Will you be picking up your very own VZW iPhone in the near future? Or have you gotten yours already? If so and if you are new to the iPhone family, you should definitely check out Erica Sadun's Verizon iPhone 101: What new owners need to know to get started to get your iPhone ownership experience off on the right foot.

The New York Times to provide reporters with the iPhone 4

Posted on February 3, 2011 by David Quilty.

The New York Times is giving their mobile reporters iPhone 4s to shoot video out in the field along with the ability to upload them to NYT servers using Aspera's high-speed file transfer software. Brought to our attention by MacStories, The New York Times' Editorial Director for Video and Television Ann Derry recently spoke to the Beet.TV Online Video Journalism Summit about the decision, saying that the iPhone 4 is a "game changer" for mobile video and the news business.

The first NYT staff member to receive and use his new iPhone 4 was Andrew Ross Sorkin, who used it for his coverage of The World Economic Forum forum in Davos, Switzerland. You can watch his report "Setting the Stage at Davos" over at the NYT site.

With a critically acclaimed director shooting movies with an iPhone and even some professional photographers giving them a go, it's no surprise that the media is starting to use them as real-time news-collecting devices. When even my local news station asks me each night to send in any video I take with my iPhone, I know it has become a rather mainstream phenomenon.

Verizon iPhone orders already shipping

Posted on by David Quilty.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Those of you who placed your pre-order for the Verizon iPhone 4 early this morning may be in for a nice surprise tomorrow, as TUAW reader Cameron from The 9magnets Blog wrote in to let us know that his VZW iPhone has apparently already shipped out. A screenshot of his order (and the corresponding American Express bill) shows that the device was shipped via FedEx overnight for delivery by 3PM -- meaning he should have it in his hands by tomorrow afternoon.

Verizon's FAQ's states that "iPhone 4 orders will arrive on or before February 10, 2011" so I guess we'll see if that holds true. Many early AT&T iPhone 4 orders showed "shipped" status very quickly last year, but the phones were actually held for delivery until the official launch date. To Cameron and any other readers who placed their order already -- please be sure to let us know if your phone arrives sometime tomorrow. And while you are waiting patiently by the door, be sure to read up on some Verizon iPhone prep articles about saving your old voicemails and migrating your contacts so you are ready as soon as the doorbell rings.

EA breaks records with App Store sales last quarter

Posted on by David Quilty.
Categories: Uncategorized.

EA LogoWhile their sales may not add up to all 10 billion apps that the App Store has sold, Electronic Arts is boasting of amazing third quarter sales of its own iOS apps. Joystiq reports that COO John Schappert recently discussed just how well EA apps did during the holiday season. Schappert said, "The day after Christmas, the millions who were activating their new devices, EA held 14 of the top 25 paid apps for the iPhone and 15 of the top 25 paid apps for the iPad."

Part of the reason EA did so well, other than offering titles iOS users were obviously willing to pay for, was that it dropped prices on most of its iOS apps in December, setting off a price war amongst developers on the App Store. EA's timing was impeccable, however, because Apple froze the App Store charts on December 23, leaving many EA titles right near or at the top of the charts for the remainder of the holidays. Very smart indeed.

Verizon iPhone prep: Save your old voicemail, it’s not coming with you

Posted on February 2, 2011 by David Quilty.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Thinking of picking up a new iPhone 4 for your Verizon account in the coming weeks? Macworld's review is already up, as are Engadget's, Techcrunch's and Wired's (spoiler: It's an iPhone 4!) but if you want to save any of those all-important legacy voicemails during the setup process, be sure to read this tip over at Verizon called Getting Ready for iPhone 4 - Saving Your Existing Voice Mail.

Depending on whether or not your old phone supports Verizon's Visual Voice Mail service, there are two sets of directions to make sure you don't lose any of your messages when setting up your new voice mailbox. It's important to note that once your new iPhone 4 is activated you will no longer have access to your existing voice mailbox, so it's vital you follow the instructions provided if you want to keep any messages.

For those with savvy devices, you can add the $2.99 Visual Voice Mail service pack that lets you download voicemails to your computer. If you have a phone that doesn't work with Visual Voice Mail, Verizon suggests contacting a third-party service provider to offload the voicemails... at which point you might consider whether you really want to hold onto them. You can always play them back into your computer microphone for recording if you absolutely need them.

Earlier today, Megan Lavey filled us in on the availability of Verizon's Transfer app for migrating your contacts to VZW iPhones. This free app will make sure your contact list doesn't get lost when setting up your new device.

The Verizon iPhone 4 will be available to qualified customers for pre-order tomorrow, February 3, and I already heard from my brother that he's going to get up early to get his order in. How many of you will be doing the same?

The Engadget Show featuring Steve Wozniak’s white iPhone

Posted on February 1, 2011 by David Quilty.

You may remember when Steve Wozniak flashed his (fake) white iPhone on CNN back in December, but Engadget now has something even better -- a six minute video of Woz discussing his white iPhone and about how he bought the parts from a teenager who Apple later shut down. The video is an edited segment from the January 31, 2011 edition of The Engadget Show and is a must-see for Apple fanatics awaiting the arrival of the mystical white iPhone 4 this spring.

Retro iPhone case adds Gordon Gekko style

Posted on January 28, 2011 by David Quilty.

Miss out on living in the 1980's with the big hair and the white-washed jeans? Don't fret -- now you can bring a little bit of 80's flash to 2011 with this Gordon Gekko-style iPhone case from Thumbs Up. Brought to our attention by Gizmodo, this "80's Phone" iPhone case is carefully designed to make your slim and sleek device a large, bulky conversation piece capable of making your acquaintances believe you are a time traveler from the past -- or simply the exact opposite of an early adopter.

While many clever iPhone cases have been making the rounds lately, like this Apple Newton case or this Etch-a-Sketch one, the "80's Phone" one takes the cake for me as a specialty case because it's modeled after phones that people actually used 20-30 years ago. Priced at around US $20 it would be a rather funny gag gift for your favorite iPhone owner, but after living through the 80's and still having nightmares about phones that big, I myself may have to stick to one of the new iPhone cases our own Victor Agreda, Jr. saw at CES a few weeks ago.

CBS Sports updates pro football iPad app for playoffs

CBS Sports iPad
I may not be happy about what happened to my New England Patriots on Sunday but that won't stop me from following the last four teams on their road to the Super Bowl this year. For those of you who may feel the same way, 148Apps is reporting that CBS Sports has updated their free CBS Sports Pro Football iPad App right in time for the rest of the playoffs. iPad owners get play-by-play action, scoring updates, streaming video, lineups, and even control over their CBS Sports fantasy football teams.

While one may think it's a little late in the season to update an app, these last three matches are a very important group of games. We'll be sure to have more coverage here of football apps just in time for the Super Bowl, but in the meantime maybe football fanatics can pass some time with a little Madden 2011 for the iPad and iPhone?

Football fans can download the free app from the Apple App Store but remember -- if you are at someone else's house for the remaining games, please be sure to wash the Doritos off your fingers before bogarting their iPad. Don't own an iPad? No need to fret, as CBS Sports also has an iPhone/iPod touch version of the app you can download as well.

Font made out of 540 iPhone apps

Posted on by David Quilty.
Categories: Uncategorized.
iPhone app fontSure, you may have already picked up your Steve Jobs mosiac print made from Apple products, but do you have a font made entirely from 540 iPhone apps? I didn't think so! Tumblr We Love Apple posted about this font made by Oriol Fernandez Tur, a catalan art director from Barcelona with "too much free time" -- his own words. Organizing iPhone apps by color, Tur invented his own typeface font, with each page of apps being a different letter of the alphabet.

While some Apple fans may just want to change the note-taking font on their iPad to Helvetica or make their own custom signature in the Mail.app, truly dedicated fanboys and fangirls everywhere might want to check out Tur's custom iPhone app font and try to make it their own. The font is a little tough to read, but at the very least it could be used to leave secret messages on friends' iPhones or iPads.

Oxygen Audio’s O Car deck turns your iPhone into a car stereo

Posted on January 10, 2011 by David Quilty.

Like the idea of having your iPhone with you in your car but looking for an alternative to a Bluetooth transmitter or cabled hook-ups? You may want to check out the Oxygen Audio O Car stereo deck, which basically turns your iPhone itself into your car stereo. Brought to our attention by Gizmodo, the O Car deck allows users to control all the regular car stereo functions like volume and tuning along with their iTunes library, internet radio station apps, GPS navigation, Google maps -- and anything else one uses their iPhone for. By clicking the iPhone into the dock/charger (for both landscape and portrait use), it becomes a slick part of your car's dashboard. Sure beats the look of your regular old standard car stereo deck, that's for sure.

Priced at US$349, the O Car has pre-amp outputs, FM/AM preset station options, puts out 4 X 55 watts of power (max) and supports the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4. While it is seemingly a little pricey, it's a neat implementation for in-car iPhone use. I have been using my iPhone to listen to Pandora streaming in the car via a wired connection, but my phone always ends up somewhere on the passenger-side floor when I take a corner too fast. Having the ability to click it in place right on the dash would be a welcome addition to my car. Of course, I could just install an in-dash iPad for even more features, but my Mini Cooper doesn't really have that kind of space.

Google Goggles for iPhone recognizes ads, solves Sudoku puzzles

Google Goggles Suduko

Your iPhone just got a little bit smarter thanks to some help from Google. As reported by MacStories, a new version of the Google Goggles component of the iPhone Google Mobile App is available for downloading, and this update does something pretty impressive -- it can help you solve those pesky Sudoku puzzles you love to torture yourself with. By using Goggles to take a picture of the puzzle you are working on, you can now take all the hard work out of figuring out the answers.

In addition to the new Sudoku-solving abilities, this update also can scan any printed advertisement and return web results for whatever product or service the ad is for. Goggles can now recognize print ads "appearing in major U.S. magazines and newspapers from August 2010 onwards", a major upgrade from the way it worked in the past when it just enabled users to search the web by taking pictures with their mobile device.

I have been using the Amazon barcode scanner and Red Laser on my iPhone for what seems like forever, and Google Goggles' ability to scan and look up any ads I am interested in seems like another helpful feature to do my comparison shopping with.

QWERTY case adds slide-out keyboard to your iPhone

Posted on December 28, 2010 by David Quilty.

Boxwave Keyboard CaseLove that new iPhone you got for Christmas, but miss the full QWERTY keyboard from your old Blackberry? Feel like the iPhone should be a lot bigger than it is? You're in luck -- Boxwave has released their Keyboard Buddy Case which is both, well, a slide-out keyboard and a case for your iPhone. The case doubles the size of your phone due to the Bluetooth slide-out QWERTY keyboard that comes complete with a top row of numbers as well as Home and Spotlight search buttons. The Bluetooth-linked keyboard/case charges via USB and has a battery life of about 45 days, which isn't too shabby at all.

We have seen some bulky iPhone cases in the past along with some different add-on keyboards, but this implementation seems to be pretty slick. For wanna-be Apple customers like a friend of mine who refuses to switch to an iPhone because she doesn't think she could possibly use the virtual keyboard, something like this could be a nice compromise. Like the rest of us have done, they will eventually get used to virtual typing, but products like the Keyboard Buddy Case could act as a bridge to bring a few more Blackberry users over to the iPhone side.

The Keyboard Buddy Case is currently available on sale for US $69.95 (regularly $79.95) with free shipping from Boxwave.com

NoseDial lets you dial your iPhone with your nose

Posted on December 27, 2010 by David Quilty.
Categories: Uncategorized.
NoseDialHands full of gifts to return after Christmas but still need to make a call with your iPhone? Well don't worry, as NoseDial is here to help you out. NoseDial is exactly what the name implies that it is -- a visual dialer for your iPhone that lets you scroll through your contacts by tilting your phone and then call them by pecking at their picture with your nose. Sure, you still need to be able to somehow tilt the phone with your hand or some other way to move through your contacts, but if your fingers are otherwise occupied with bags and/or inside your winter mittens, at least you can still make a phone call using just your nose.

While you may get some rather odd looks from those around you, NoseDial is a pretty neat concept even if not a particularly smooth way to dial your phone. Available from the German iTunes App Store for a little bit over US $1.00, NoseDial could come in handy on those freezing cold walks to work -- or if you were a super-secret spy whose hands were otherwise tied up.

We've seen some interesting visual dialers and custom dialers before for the iPhone, but this is definitely the first we've seen designed with nose dialing in mind.

Ford’s AppLink to support iPhone voice control of apps

Posted on December 24, 2010 by David Quilty.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Ford Sync
My, how far we have come since Ford offered a "standard" iPod jack in its 2008 Ford Escape. Starting this month (and next depending on the model), SYNC-equipped Ford Fiesta owners with iPhone, Android or BlackBerry smartphones will be able to use free software from Ford called AppLink, which gives SYNC users voice control over several apps on their phones. Available for download over at owner site www.syncmyride.com, the first apps compatible with AppLink are Pandora (internet radio), Stitcher (news radio) and OpenBeak (for listening to Twitter posts).

While AppLink was initially only supposed to be for Android and BlackBerry phones, Ford decided to add the iPhone to its list of supported devices. By using Bluetooth streaming with Android and BlackBerry devices and a USB port for the iPhone, users just press the VOICE button on their steering wheel to enable voice command control of their apps. Currently only for SYNC-equipped Ford Fiestas, Ford says that additional vehicles and controllable apps are coming in 2011.

Just 12 months ago Ford started offering iTunes tagging in their cars with HD Radios, giving users the ability to tag songs for later purchase in iTunes. While that's a neat idea and something I am sure we will see more of in the future, it's really encouraging to see more work being done on the voice control front in the automobile world. With more and more people taking advantage of their smartphones while driving, and with Apple looking to hire more voice recognition specialists, anything that can make the roads a little safer to drive on is all right by me.

Several iPhone and Android apps sharing private user data

Posted on December 20, 2010 by David Quilty.
Categories: Uncategorized.

App StoreAn investigation by The Wall Street Journal has found that some iPhone and Android apps are are spying on users and potentially transmitting personal data to other companies. While both Apple and Google say that they have privacy protections in place for their customers, many apps are able to skirt around them either on purpose or by claiming ignorance as the maker of Pumpkin Maker (a pumpkin-carving app) did, saying that he didn't know that he needed user permission before sharing the data he collected inside his app. But in speaking to the WSJ, Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr said that "We have created strong privacy protections for our customers, especially regarding location-based data. Privacy and trust are vitally important."

iPhone apps transmitted more data than the Android apps tested, and two apps in particular stood out: Pandora and TextPlus 4. Pandora (a music streaming app) and TextPlus 4 (a text messaging app) sent the phone's unique ID number, along with the user's age, gender, and zip code to several different advertising companies. Out of 101 apps tested in the study, the WSJ found that over half sent the ID number out to companies without the user's consent.

Privacy concerns are often at the forefront of user's minds and rightly so, but I do think most people understand that companies collect some information and that whatever is collected is actually beneficial to their user experience. Apple itself recently detailed their location collection policies that they use to provide location-specific information to members of Congress after the House of Representatives looked into the company's privacy policy. And as a personal example, I use the Yelp app quite a bit to discover new restaurants in my area. I do know that they are collecting location information from me and it is probably being kept in a database somewhere, but I also believe that it helps Yelp tailor my (and others') experience with their app, as they want users to share information with them and so do I -- without some of this info the app wouldn't be all that valuable.

Do I want these app companies sharing my name, age, gender, mailing address, birthdate or sexual preference with ad networks everywhere? Not really, and I do believe we should have the ability to opt out of sharing anything if we so choose. Apps that are doing that without gaining my permission to do so shouldn't be allowed in the App Store. But a little location-based marketing in the apps that it is needed in does go a long way to making a more positive user experience. Macworld thinks that the concerns raised by the WSJ are overblown. What do you guys think?

Tips for protecting your iPhone from loss

Posted on December 9, 2010 by David Quilty.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Find iPhoneWorried about losing your iPhone? You aren't alone. While many people lose their phones, there are a few precautions you can take in advance before it happens to you. Luckily for us, Jason D. O'Grady over at ZDNet recently lost (and found) his iPhone after it went missing for a few days, and he decided to share some of his tips on how to protect your iPhone from loss -- and how to get it back if you ever lose yours.

Some of O'Grady's suggestions are obvious, like enabling Find My iPhone (which we have talked about here before), but there are a few more ideas on his list that may surprise you which you should check out. In addition, our very own TJ Luoma has a few more suggestions to maximize your chances of recovering your iPhone, and Steve Sande learned a few things after losing his iPhone a while back. The important thing is to take these steps before you lose your phone so in the event of loss you are already prepared to try to get it back.

While I don't do a ton to protect my own iPhone, I do use passcode lock and I do a backup of it each and every day, just in case. Losing my phone would be bad, but losing the data on it would be even worse.

Patent application suggests contextual voice commands for iPhone

Posted on by David Quilty.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Voice Command Patent ApplicationA patent application filed by Apple in 2009 but just released to the public last week shows that they want to improve on the voice command abilities of the iPhone. As reported by AppleInsider, the patent looks as though it would make voice commands available in individual applications rather than system-wide, narrowing down the possibilities to a chosen few commands and drastically reducing the chances of the iPhone making a mistake.

The patent also mentions allowing third-party apps to make use of voice commands, and that users could be audibly notified of what app they had selected along with a list of corresponding voice commands. This could come in really handy when driving the car or riding a bicycle, when one's eyes should be on the road and not staring at an iPhone screen.

Now I don't know about you, but I have never been able to reliably use the voice command feature on my iPhone. The few times I've tried to use it, I ended up calling an ex-girlfriend when I meant to call the current one or called my grandmother instead of my brother. So any improvements Apple could make to voice command would be more than welcome. I have used other voice command apps like Dragon Dictation and Apple's recent acquisition Siri, but a context-based voice command system would be a great addition to the iPhone's abilities.

Angry Birds cases for Angry Birds addicts

Angry Birds iPhone CaseYou play it in line at the grocery store and you play it when passing time at the laundromat, but now those Angry Birds have arrived in the form of a case for your iPhone 4 or iPod touch. Made by Gear4 and available now for US $24.99, the hard plastic cases are colorfully adorned with either Red Bird, Yellow Bird, or the Pig King himself.

Rovio's incredibly popular game entails slingshotting birds at green pigs who have stolen their eggs. It has seemingly taken on a life of its own with new versions being announced for Halloween, Christmas, and now Seasons -- along with also unleashing some homemade Angry Birds costumes. One fan even decided to recreate the game using balls, clay, eggs, slingshots and cardboard boxes for her very own "live" version at home.

Angry Birds is currently the game I play most on my iPhone, but I don't think I am at a level of addiction where I need a matching case. Are you there yet?

AT&T rated worst cellphone provider by Consumer Reports

Remember when Consumer Reports couldn't recommend the iPhone 4? Well, now Consumer Reports has released the results of a satisfaction survey which shows that according to over 50,000 of their readers, AT&T is the lowest-scoring cell-phone carrier in the United States. In fact, AT&T scored a "Worse" rating (a full-black dot for those in the know) in every single category of the survey save for texting. In that category they received a half-black dot ranking, or one lowly step above "Worse". AT&T was the only telecom provider on the survey to see a significant drop in overall customer satisfaction, while both Verizon and Sprint saw "Average" to "Better" rankings.

While Apple itself has topped Consumer Reports' tech support survey in the past, AT&T has a long way to go, as half of those who responded to the survey as being unhappy with AT&T owned some version of the iPhone. Electronics Editor for Consumer Reports Paul Reynolds said that "Our survey suggests that an iPhone from Verizon Wireless, which is rumored, could indeed be good news for iPhone fans."

Got that right.
