Twitter partners with Firefox, adds new image sharing tools

twittermbp.jpg

As TechCrunch suggested earlier in the week, Twitter announced a few new features today: improved search on hashtags and usernames, and a Twitter-branded image/video sharing service that may disrupt established players like TwitPic and yFrog (the back-end for Twitter's service is provided by PhotoBucket). The photo service will be live in the next few weeks.

The company also announced a partnership with Mozilla to deliver a custom version of Firefox that does Twitter search in the location bar; current FF users can get the same features via a plugin.

This upgraded suite of capabilities lines up nicely with the other TechCrunch tidbit from yesterday, suggesting that part of the image service's mission is to integrate with iOS 5. iPhone users would presumably gain a 'Send to Twitter' button in any image-enabled application, although there are hints that this might go quite a bit further. If it's part of a larger plan for shared services on iDevices, that could dramatically improve the multi-app experience for people working with different sorts of data; Richard points to this Chris Clark post from a year ago with some ideas about how that might work.

Version 9 of MindManager is scheduled to ship on June 23, and will cost US$129 for upgrades or $249 for new licenses. It will add several new features, including a presentation mode, "quick entry" option, WYSIWIG printing, offline import/export for Office and iWork, dynamic content (schedules and Internet links), plus a project management mode adequate to light PM tasks.

We'll take a detailed look at MindManager Mac 9 when it gets closer to shipping, but there's another piece of the puzzle: mobile. Both apps promise a best-in-class mind mapping tool on iOS, with Dropbox integration and MindManager desktop compatibility for round-tripping your maps.

Rumor: NFC payments coming to Apple Stores soon?

Posted on May 17, 2011 by Michael Rose.
Categories: Uncategorized.

It may be a case of putting the cart before the horse, but Boy Genius Report suggests that some of the retail rumblings coincident with the Apple Stores' 10th anniversary (coming this week) may have to do with the stores being equipped to take payments via Near Field Communications (NFC) setups. Presumably the existing EasyPay system could be swapped out for NFC-enabled iPod touch handhelds with a handy-dandy sled, giving Apple a solid test platform for future NFC hardware in other devices.

The rumor mill has been grinding at both ends on the likelihood of NFC in future iPhones, with arguments pro and con registering points. While major players like Visa have already committed to testing NFC hardware in specialized cases for the iPhone and other devices, it's not clear that Apple is ready to put its payment eggs in the iOS device basket. If, however, BGR is right and the stores are getting an NFC facelift to support payments, that would be a major tell about the future of the technology in Apple's product line.

Exclusive: TinyChat to enable location-linked video chat on iPhone 4

Posted on May 13, 2011 by Michael Rose.
Categories: Uncategorized.

tinychat.jpgWhen it comes to ad-hoc video chatting with friends, strangers or space aliens, the heir apparent to the Chatroulette throne is TinyChat.

This Flash-based video-chatting service, launched in 2009, lets you create chatrooms on the fly. You and several friends can all broadcast, while more attendees/fans/you-name-its can watch and comment.

It's become quite popular with more than 30,000 people joining the site every day and a million active daily users. It's even got the requisite celeb cred with financial backing from Sean 'Puffy' Combs and Charlie Sheen's replacement Ashton Kutcher.

Today, the site released a major redesign along with a new feature: location tagging for your video chats. You can choose to reveal your region or location down to a 10-mile radius, and the service displays a 'chats in your area' map to help you identify nearby conversations.

Co-founder Dan Blake says that this feature is a natural extension of the geotagging options in social services like Facebook or Twitter: "This is all about continuing to make the world a more connected place via the web. Say, if there's a regular Tinychat room you use to discuss fishing, we think this feature will make it even easier for those users to meet 'IRL' for an actual fishing trip!" (Of course, the service's safety tips page reminds you never, ever to agree to meet someone in real life that you encounter on the service... a bit of cognitive dissonance there.)

Where there's video and location awareness, you know what's bound to be right around the corner. TUAW has learned that TinyChat has an iPhone app in the late stages of development, scheduled for release within the next couple of weeks. iPhone 4 users will be able to participate in chats on the go, and can include their location information (again, this is optional) with their user profile or their chatroom settings. It's likely that TinyChat will be first to market with this capability; although Apple could always add location to FaceTime, that would probably provoke a wave of privacy concerns.

You can sign up for a free TinyChat account through the site or via Facebook; when the iPhone app is ready for prying eyes, we'll preview it here.

Third Rail zaps iPhone case market with detachable battery pack

Posted on May 10, 2011 by Michael Rose.
Categories: Uncategorized.

thirdrail2.jpg

For every gadget that claims to charge an iPhone on the go, there's sure to be a constituency that swears by it (or quite possibly at it). With external battery packs from HyperMac, Zagg, Kensington, Newer and Monoprice, you can dangle a cable; with battery-equipped cases from Exogear, Boost and Kensington you can keep your extra joules right next to your phone. We've seen some clever inventions (the RichardSolo 1800, the PowerEZ) and too-clever ones (the XPower charger-in-a-cable), but precious few options that give you power when you need it without adding weight, aggravation and charging hassles.

Since Macworld Expo this year, I've been happily using the US$79.99 mophie juice pack air with my iPhone 4 when I need extended power. It's light (about 68 grams), packs a solid 1500 mAh battery and charges reliably and simply with a Micro USB cable. It's a great product, but it does bulk up the phone substantially; if you carry the iPhone in a pocket, you'll notice the difference in weight and size (mophie's 2000 mAh product, the $99.95 juice pack plus, adds even more bulk and mass). I also don't need extra power most of the time; it's only when I've got a busy day on the road and I can't charge here and there. If there were a way to get the all-in-one convenience of the juice pack without having to carry the battery all the time, I'd love it.

That's why I was excited to check out Third Rail Mobility's new battery & case system for the iPhone 4, developed by a family of entrepreneurs who say they aren't afraid to touch the 'third rail' of mobile consumer electronics in addressing poor battery life. The system, on sale today, pairs a slimline 1250 mAh battery with a light protective case. But this battery comes off, attaching firmly when you need it and staying out of the way in your bag or jacket when you don't. I've been testing a prerelease unit for the past week, hoping to figure out if it truly is the best of both worlds.

Apple’s Bud Tribble will testify before Senate committee, says Franken

Posted on May 6, 2011 by Michael Rose.
Categories: Uncategorized.

In the ongoing commotion around location, privacy and what your iPhone knows about what you did last summer, the witness list for upcoming Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearings on mobile privacy has been announced. Senator Al Franken's (D-MN) office told The Loop that Apple's VP of software technology, Guy L. "Bud" Tribble, will be there, along with regulators, privacy advocates and Google's VP of public policy.

Franken invited the companies to send representatives to his hearing a couple of weeks ago, as the location issues were making news. Tribble has been on the hot seat before when it comes to Congressional oversight of digital privacy; he appeared at a similar hearing last summer, alongside Facebook's CTO and Google's lead privacy engineer. He's also one of the longest-serving Apple and NeXT veterans, and is credited with identifying the legendary Reality Distortion Field power of Steve Jobs. Perhaps he should borrow the field generator for his testimony.

The hearings will begin on May 10 at 10 am Eastern time. If you're watching on C-SPAN, keep an eye on the senators as Tribble enters the room... the ones that recoil and run away are almost certainly Klingons.

No Comment: Inneract provides antidote to restrictive social norms

Posted on May 5, 2011 by Michael Rose.
Categories: Uncategorized.

inneract-1.jpgIf you've ever felt the urge to chest-bump a stranger or dance the cha-cha on a city street, you're probably a fan of the antics of Improv Everywhere.

The NYC-based 'prank collective' executes missions large and small, defying the expectations of passerby with group freezes, flash musicals and the occasional Imperial arrest on a subway. Of course, for most of us the logistical and artistic challenge of creating a surreal and transgressive experience for ourselves and others is... well... just too much darn work.

Now, thanks to the efforts of artist Lauren McCarthy, there's Inneract. This free app lets you post your location and your desired interaction so that other users of the app can find you and do unto you as you would have them. Want to create a drum circle? Splash in a public fountain? Have a tickle battle? If you can imagine it, you can put it into Inneract and let the world fulfill your wildest need for novelty. See the video below for some relatively staid examples.

Sure, we could point out all the ways this concept could go very, very wrong. We could ponder the possibility that an evil companion might put your picture into the app along with a rather personal request, and then sit next to you to watch the fun. We could suggest some ideas for in-app purchases ($0.99 to enable Fight Club Mode, "I want someone to come over and kick my ass"), or muse on the irony of a location-based app that exposes your deepest fetish to everyone around you. Instead, though, we'll let this app stand as today's truly wacky No Comment.

Thanks to Wilson for the tip.

i.TV extends to the iPad, adds Hulu integration

Posted on by Michael Rose.
Categories: Uncategorized.

itvtop.jpg

The free i.TV app for iPhone has been providing program guide and show information for TV addicts since October of 2008, and it's been improving steadily since then. With version 3, now available on the App Store, the app has gone universal and provides a full-screen iPad experience for browsing schedules, shows and TV-related news.

The main i.TV interface has been overhauled (clearing up some of the issues we noted previously), and now defaults to Shows mode; you can select from top programs, search and sift through a comprehensive list, or assign favorites for quick access. Tapping on a show gives you a rundown of the most recent episodes, details about upcoming airings, links to news and IMDb/Wikipedia entries on the show -- in other words, more info than you could possibly need. You can also set your TiVo DVR to record the show right from your iPhone or iPad. All the same features are available from the program grid if you want to see what's on now or at a future time.

There's more action in the 'Where to Watch' section; if you want to buy episodes from iTunes, watch them on TV or add DVDs to your Netflix queue, all are a tap away. Version 3 adds Hulu to the watching options, so if you're a Hulu Plus subscriber you can launch the Hulu iPad app directly from i.TV and start watching many shows in moments.

In the v3 rebuild, some features of previous versions have dropped out. The app's Facebook and Twitter integration is being redesigned; although you can use your Facebook credentials to authenticate, you can't share show info on the social networks at the moment. The ability in earlier versions to control a Roku remote is also gone in v3, and that apparently will not be coming back.

If you're looking for an attractive and capable iPhone or iPad program guide, give i.TV a spin; if you're a TiVo owner, you definitely want to have it on your device.

Earth Day: Lower your carbon output (and blood pressure) with Roadify

Posted on April 22, 2011 by Michael Rose.
Categories: Uncategorized.

RoadifyApp-200x300.pngIn this year's NYC Big Apps 2.0 competition, there was a lot at stake for the developers behind the 57 app submissions. Not only were they up for cash prizes, but the recognition of their efforts to leverage the city's data mine for the public good was certain to boost their profile in Silicon Alley, and possibly attract bigger investors (or customers!) to their offerings.

For the grand prize winner, Roadify, the increased awareness of their commuter-support platform means big improvements: more people participating and more/better data. The service, which depends on crowdsourced reporting of available parking spaces, bus positioning and subway arrivals along with public data on transit schedules and privately-sourced data on gas or garage pricing, becomes more useful as more users are sending in their information.

Roadify supports 'giving' and 'getting' parking spaces (or updating transit details) via SMS, but it's with the iPhone app that the service really shines. Users can share and check transit information, traffic conditions, gas pricing and more -- plus they can quickly find a parking spot in congested areas. Considering that New York City drivers sometimes find themselves circling and circling in the hopeless search for an open parking spot, any approach to cutting that time will save on gas, reduce pollution and make the Big Apple a happier place.

If you're a frequent or occasional NYC commuter, check out the free Roadify app; you can also watch the Roadify demo video in the continuation of this post.

Subway riders subject to iPhone thefts

Posted on by Michael Rose.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The WSJ's Andrew Grossman reports (subscription required) that New York City's subway riders may be a bit too openhanded with their digital devices. According to NYPD statistics, grand larceny* incidents on the subway were up 18% year-over-year from January to March of 2011 (311 reports in total). Transit police brass attribute the spike in pilferage to increased theft of smartphones, and of course the most popular choice for thieves is the iPhone 4.

The article quotes NYPD transit chief Raymond Diaz on the increase: "We've been seeing an incredible trend of young people snatching these cellphones." Diaz also noted that thefts are likelier during the evening rush hour, and that several train lines (Manhattan's Lexington Avenue lines, Brooklyn's J and L trains, and Queens' M, R and 7 lines) seem to be 'hot spots' for thefts. The city's commuter rail lines have also seen a mild spike in thefts.

While subway crime in New York remains at an extremely low level compared to historical norms, there are a few tips that Chief Diaz suggests to keep that ride trouble-free. Don't stand near the train doors while using your phone, since that would streamline a thief's getaway; be sure to record your iPhone and iPad serial number in your personal records; and, of course, if you have Find My iPhone turned on, you might even get your device back.

Police efforts to track down phone-grabbing perps meet with some success; they make arrests in 30% of incidents of phones being swiped from owners' hands, and in 56% of incidents where force was used in a phone robbery.

* While the New York State legal definition of 'grand larceny' is generally perceived to cover property worth $1,000 or more (which is pricier than an iPhone or iPad, unless it's in a very nice case), the definition also applies to about 12 other conditions (i.e. if the theft involves secret scientific formulas, credit cards, cars, guns, religious items, phone phreaking gear, or ammonia for making meth), including when the property in question is taken directly from the person who owns it, rather than stolen from an apartment or office when the owner is not present. These subway thefts match that part of the grand larceny law, making them a class E felony. Thanks to our friend in the NYC district attorney's office for clarifying the rules.

Good Technology sees boost in iPhone, iPad activations in Q1

Posted on by Michael Rose.

A few months ago, enterprise mobile integrator Good Technology reported on the second round of metrics from its device activation data. The story showed strong growth for Android phones; while the iPhone remained in first place, but the curves were getting closer.

In the first quarter of this year, however, something rather disruptive happened. In the company's latest report [PDF], released today, the iPhone has widened the gap again -- and it's largely due to the Verizon effect. "There's no doubt that Verizon's launch of the iPhone 4, combined with AT&T's response on the discounted 3GS devices, certainly gave iPhones a bit of a lift," says Good's SVP of Corporate Strategy, John Herrema.

"What we were seeing in the 4th quarter was that Android was trending upward and getting close to catching up," he says, "but in the first quarter of 2011 the iPhone has reasserted itself as the leading platform, at least with activations by our customers." The Verizon iPhone launch apparently resulted in the highest rate of activation (16.9 percent) for any new device since Good has been publicly tracking and publishing reports (Q3 2010).

The tablet story is dramatically more one-sided, with the iPad and iPad 2 generating almost all of the tablet activations Good saw in the quarter. iPads represented about 20% of all device activations seen on the system, with Android tablets creeping in and reaching the 1% mark for the first time. "We're seeing the tablet momentum continuing, really driven by iPad and iPad 2," said Herrema. "We're starting to see the first glimmers of Android tablets showing up on the scene. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out in the 2nd quarter, especially as Honeycomb [Android 3.0] shows up on more devices besides the Motorola Xoom."

Overall, iOS devices made up just under 70% of all device activations Good measured during the quarter. As before, Good's visibility into the enterprise is solid but not comprehensive; it cannot measure BlackBerry deployment volumes, nor does it support Windows 7 phones at this time. Nevertheless, as a proxy for deployments of the devices it does support, Good's numbers are (sorry) pretty good.

Sudden spike in iTunes ‘The item you tried to buy is no longer available’ errors

Posted on April 13, 2011 by Michael Rose.

We have no idea why (sorry!), but there's apparently a surge in "missing" apps in the App Store tonight. This results in the error message "The item you tried to buy is no longer available" when you attempt to purchase.

Based on our search traffic hitting this post, the problem started earlier this evening and is affecting at least the US, UK, Canadian and Australian app stores. Apple's Pages is reportedly one of the affected apps.

Chances are this is a transient glitch and will be sorted out soon, so the best advice for the moment is to be patient and try again in an hour or so. If it's not cleared up by the AM hours on the East Coast we'll update this post.

Adobe TV comes to iPad and iPhone

Posted on April 11, 2011 by Michael Rose.

In the flurry of overnight news from Adobe around the pre-launch of CS5.5 and the iPad/Photoshop goodness to come, one official blog post slipped under the radar. While it's not necessarily pinned to CS5.5, it is fantastic news for anyone who uses Adobe's video training resources to learn the Creative Suite apps: Adobe TV is now iOS-friendly.

Considering the wealth of video classes, tips and how-tos loaded up on tv.adobe.com (much of it sourced from the excellent lynda.com library), it's not surprising that the number one customer request has been to get playback access from the iPad and iPhone -- you can learn a lot about Photoshop on your lunch hour, if you've got the bandwidth.

What is a bit surprising is that Adobe chose to dodge the Flash-on-iOS flamewar and is putting this resource where the market wanted it to be. As Adobe's Bob Donion says, "There's no subtext related to Flash, which we continue to use to deliver our content onto Flash-supported devices. We believe in delivering our content to all platforms and devices that are meaningful to our audience."

Kudos to the Adobe TV team for getting its stream on for iOS; we're looking forward to filling our brains.

Could future iPhones charge with the power of the sun?

Posted on March 22, 2011 by Michael Rose.

Mark Spoonauer at LAPTOP got a nice story at CTIA today when he sat down with French company Wysips. The prototype he saw puts a solar panel -- a transparent solar panel, thin enough to work with touchscreens -- directly atop the screen of a phone, and with enough oomph to charge the phone with light.

The photovoltaic film (less than 100 microns deep) is only in the development phase now, but Wysips is looking forward to working with glass manufacturers (like Corning, makers of the Gorilla Glass that covers the iPhone 4) to integrate the charger film directly into screen glass.

The solar layer will generate power in room light or sunlight; this version will fully charge a phone in about 6 hours of light exposure, with future generations becoming more efficient as the technology matures. Like the plug-in hybrid technology in today's cars, it might not be enough juice to get you cross-country -- but if the solar film is cheap enough, it would certainly provide a power boost when you're away from your charger.

Fun stuff. Check out the post on LAPTOP's blog and the accompanying gallery of the Wysips prototype.

If you don’t have an iPhone: Apple ads posted to YouTube

Posted on March 17, 2011 by Michael Rose.

The new iPhone television ads that debuted earlier this week have made it to Apple's official YouTube channel, just for your viewing pleasure. The three ads all share the "If you don't have an iPhone..." tagline, and they focus on the App Store, iPod/iTunes and iBooks respectively.

As TAB points out, the inclusion of iBooks as a selling point for the iPhone is a little bit odd -- the iOS-only bookstore doesn't match up well against Amazon's multiplatform Kindle offering, which lets you read your books on iPhone, iPad, PCs and Macs (not to mention Kindle devices). Amazon is even working towards a web-only Kindle reader, which will further expand the ebook universe. Barnes & Noble's Nook also has a more flexible device profile for reading ebooks.

The post over at The Apple Blog speculates that the increased focus on iBooks may be foreshadowing the June 30 enforcement of Apple's in-app sales rules, which may make for a less welcoming environment for the third-party reader apps. We'll have to see.

All three ads are viewable in the continuation of this post.

Best iPhone Photos: Monument Valley with Pro HDR

monument valley

It's a landscape burned into the American historical consciousness. Utah's surreal and beautiful Monument Valley has served as a backdrop for countless Hollywood westerns. Now, our roving reporter and avid photographer Mel Martin has captured the vista right before sunset using his iPhone 4 and the Pro HDR application from EyeApps. Click the image for the full-res version.

This is a perfect example of the great work iPhone photographers are doing in the field, and it certainly passes the jawdrop test: anyone seeing it is likely to exclaim, "Wait, you took that picture with a cellphone?"

(By the way, Mel notes that this particular shot was taken without a tripod.)

Read on for another image of "The Mittens," iconic stone features of the desert, and a dawn landscape.

Conference Companion app suite poised to transform event experiences

conference companion app meetings and events planner

If you're attending a professional conference or symposium, you can expect to do a lot of walking around, meeting and greeting, professional networking and intensive learning. Unfortunately, you can also expect to be saddled with a lot of paper: venue maps, agendas, speaker bios, training manuals and product information. For years, the events industry has been working towards the goal of 'green meetings' that manage with little or no printed collateral for participants to schlep around. Unfortunately, getting a ubiquitous, easy-to-use and relatively inexpensive solution for this challenge has proved elusive.

Enter the big brains at Parliant, a longtime Mac developer based in Ottawa, Canada. For the past three years, CEO Kevin Ford and his team have been quietly testing, tuning and deploying one-off implementations of just such a 'paperless conference' solution for big-name customers like the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Canadian Media Production Association -- you can see the results on the App Store today.

Deployed on the iPod touch or iPhone, the conference apps install quickly from the App Store and then perform a full data download over Wi-Fi to fill in all the necessary content: agendas, exhibitors, maps, product details and attendee contact/social networking capabilities. The apps even include exhibitor ads, helping defray the costs for conference organizers. Parliant worked with customers to organize and convert all their content for use on the app platform.

Ford's confidence in his white-label solution is now at the point where Parliant is ready to offer this platform to the market at large. Conference Companion is now available for deployment by meeting organizers, based on a modular configuration; you only purchase the features you need. For large events and professional meetings, it's a huge step forward in the elimination of the paper schlep.

Rdio music service iPhone app updated, gives better offline controls

Posted on February 16, 2011 by Michael Rose.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The social music discovery service Rdio has gotten an iPhone facelift; the company's app has a bunch of new features in version 1.0 (released today), including a key improvement for users who sync their music from Rdio down to their phones for offline access.

Much like Apple's Ping social layer for iTunes, Rdio gives music recommendations and listings based on what your friends like to listen to -- but it also gives you direct access to the music, letting you play it on the company's website or on your mobile device.

Beyond the UI improvements in the new build (including a handy springboard for quick access to all the sections, and a persistent player at the bottom of the screen), the app now lets you select whether or not to sync music offline when on 3G connectivity, or only on WiFi. Pulling down multimegabytes of music tracks could easily crush a low-end data plan, so this will be a big help to some users.

The Rdio service was launched by two Skype founders (Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis) and is currently available only in the US and Canada. After a seven-day free trial period, the web-only service (which won't let you play music offline using the app) is $4.99 monthly; the premium mobile-enabled service is $9.99 a month.
