Gannett on the iPhone 4S

The largest newspaper publisher in the United States has ordered “thousands” of iPad 2s and iPhone 4S, according to an internal memo from Gannett newspaper division president Bob Dickey.

The independent Gannett Blog posted the memo Wednesday evening (from an iPhone no less). Writes Dickey:

In every local market, we have the most and the best journalists. These new tools will help our journalists meet the demands of the new news cycle, one that requires agility in real-time reporting, social media and greater emphasis on video storytelling, further increasing our competitive advantage.

Dickey also waxed poetic about the potential the iPhones and iPads have for journalists, saying the new devices will “enable them to do new things we can’t even imagine yet.” A note to Mr. Dickey: Give TiPb — heck, any of the Mobile Nations sites — a read. We’ll show ya real quick what can (and has) been done for years.

The phones and tablets will reach newsrooms in January.

Daily Tip: Here comes Hurricane Irene, get your iPhone ready!

Here comes Hurricane Irene, get your iPhone ready!

Here’s a quick no-brainer or two from your hurricane-prone pals at Android Central for those of you in the path of Hurricane Irene, scheduled to make landfall along the North Carolina coast on Saturday. (They’ll help you out for any natural disaster, though, from the recent east coast earthquakes to the next winter snowstorm, so keep ‘em handy!)

  • Charge your iPhones, iPod touches and iPads. Now. Keep them charged. And once the storm starts, keep them off. You’ll likely lose power at some point, and there’s a good chance your local cell network will go down for a bit, even with generator backups.
  • Spare batteries. You can’t swap iPhone or iPad batteries, but you can get external chargers and charging cases. If you got ‘em, make sure they’re charged, too. If you still have time to get some, do it.
  • After the storm, SMS text messages work best. Any carrier will tell you this, and we saw it again with that little shake the mid-Atlantic states got on Tuesday. If the network’s up, it’s going to be clogged, and calls might not go through. Text messages have a much better chance. (If you’re on iOS 5, that means turn off iMessage — it uses data, not the SMS network.)
  • If you’re worried about damage and don’t have a traditional camera, use your phone to take a few pictures of your home and your belongings. It’ll make insurance claims much easier, should it come to that.

Any tips you folks want to share? Let’s hear ‘em.

Reminder: Win a Tablet of your choice from TouchType

Win a Tablet of your Choice

Just a reminder, folks that to celebrate 1 million downloads of their SwiftKey keyboard app, TouchType is giving away a tablet each to THREE lucky winners! Which tablets? Whichever the winner chooses so long as they’re available for purchase for up to $800 where he or she lives. iPad 2, PlayBook, Xoom, Galaxy Tab are all on the table.

How do you enter? TouchType has put together a small survey which shouldn’t take more than five or ten minutes to complete. That’s it – well, that and a quick perusal of the official entry rules just to make sure you’re eligible (sorry minors and SPE employees). The contest is open to readers of Android Central, CrackBerry.com, TiPb, and WPCentral and ends at midnight Pacific on April 14.

Not familiar with TouchType? You may have also seen that TouchType made a splash at this year’s CTIA with their tablet keyboard for Honeycomb - that’s coming soon, but SwiftKey is available now for Android devices.

So get cracking on the survey, folks – these tablets aren’t going to give themselves away.

TiPb Apps 6.3: AllSport for iPhone (CTIA 2010)

AllSport at CTIA 2010

Some of us recently realized there’s a whole world out there, and perhaps it’d be a good idea to visit it once in a while, and an even better idea to (gulp) exercise in it.

And so, we hug out for a few minutes at CTIA 2010 with the folks from Trimble Outdoors and their AllSport GPS app, which comes in a free, ad-supported version [iTunes Store link] and a full, $4.99 version that adds a few additional features [App Store link]. It’s kind of your standard GPS trip app, but it’s for athletes and out-of-shape bloggers of any age. Pick your activity, hit the start button, and it tracks your route, time — hell, altitude, if you’re flying — and logs it all online for posterity and/or sharing on Facebook and the like.

Check out video of it in action after the break.

Opera Mini for iPhone — SPE at Mobile World Congress 2010

Opera Mini on iPhone

We had the opportunity at Mobile World Congress to sit down with Opera co-founder Jon S. von Tetzchner Jon S. von Tetzchner and talk Opera Mini browser for iPhone. Now the good news: We’ve seen the Opera Mini browser on the iPhone, and it is wonderful. The bad news: While we can talk about it till the cows come home, we weren’t allowed to take video or even a still picture of it. Them’s the breaks.

Assuming Apple allows it in the App Store — and Opera is pretty confident that it will be — what iPhone owners would get is for all intents and purposes the same Opera experience we know from Windows Mobile and Nokia phones.

The iPhone’s lack of multitasking — erm, one-app -at-a-time feature – also isn’t a problem. You can duck out of Opera Mobile and then hop right back in without losing where you were browsing or the app having to completely reload itself.

All in all, it looked and felt like a really good browsing experience, and is a choice that iPhone owners should have. So write your congressman. Write your senator. And cross your fingers that the App Store gods give Opera Mini their blessing.
