Graft Concepts Leverage protects your iPhone 4 with ease and style

Graft Concepts LeverageWe've seen a lot of iPhone 4 cases here at TUAW. Most thin polycarbonate or TPU cases are pretty much the same -- brute force them on to cover the back and sides. Graft Concepts have taken the thin-polycarbonate case form factor and added something a little different with a top locking latch.

Thanks to the Graft Concepts team, we got our hands on a pre-production black and chrome version of their slick looking iPhone 4 case to put through its paces.

Design

The Leverage takes the form of a bumper-style case, which wraps around the side edges of the iPhone with cut outs for the ports and buttons. It is a single piece of rubberized polycarbonate that joins at the top, locked together by a fancy chrome latch with integrated power button push-through.

The latch design makes it easy to get your iPhone in and out of the case, while still holding the case firmly and securely on your iPhone. It looks great just as a bumper, but the Leverage comes with an optional backplate insert that you can combine with the bumper to form a full case with a single cut out for the camera and flash.

This modular design gives you the best of both worlds, and depending on your mood or how much protection you want to give your phone, it's really quick and easy to remove or replace the backplate.

Protection

The combined case gives pretty good all round protection, covering all edges and the back. The case also covers the front edge of the phone meaning that you can place it flat on the screen and the case will keep the glass off the deck. The plastic construction will also offer some impact protection, but I wouldn't fancy dropping it from too high as with most relatively thin cases.

The case adds about 1-2 mm thickness to your iPhone, so it's not bulky by any stretch of the imagination. It's also quite grippy to hold, but thankfully doesn't suffer from too much pocket torsion when you're trying to pull it out of your jeans pocket.

Verdict

Bearing in mind its pre-production nature, we like the chromed locking latch (that's also available in a matte finish), which gives it something a bit different in the design stakes and functions well in practice. It provides decent protection and we like that you can swap between just a bumper and a full back case in about 5 seconds.

If you're looking for a case for your iPhone 4 in either GSM or CDMA flavors, then the US$60 Leverage is just a little bit different. If the production case matches the quality of the version we tested, the Leverage will be a great choice.

Hard Candy Street Skin for iPhone 4 makes for a decent everyday case

Street Skin for iPhone 4

Hard Candy, the folks behind the Street Skin line of tire tread-like rubber cases for Apple's iDevices we've talked about before, also has an iPhone 4 variant.

The Street Skin for iPhone 4 is made of TPU, a shock absorbing semi-flexible rubber, which encases the iPhone leaving only the screen exposed.

Along the sides there are cut-outs for the volume buttons and mute switch, while the top and bottom have holes for the power button, headphones port, dock connector and the speakers. On the back, the camera and LED flash are left exposed for snapping pictures.

The case is about 2.5 mm thick, making it pretty slimline for a rubber case and allowing it to fit in most non-custom docks without having to remove the case. It wraps around the front of the iPhone 4 as well, meaning that when laid flat on a table the screen is kept off the deck preventing scratches.

Side on

The TPU gives the case a grippy texture, but thankfully not enough to cause severe pocket torsion, where you simply can't get the iPhone out of your pocket due to friction. The rubber itself has a distinctive crisscross tire tread pattern that makes it stand out from the usual cheap silicone-based fodder you see on eBay (check out the gallery below to see it in its full glory). The corners are pretty well protected, which should help if, heaven forbid, you manage to drop your precious glass iPhone. I wouldn't advocate that the Street Skin gives great impact protection, but with a bit of luck the TPU should provide enough energy absorption to prevent the screen cracking for low height drops.

Verdict

Overall the Street Skin for iPhone 4 offers fairly good protection without adding huge amounts of bulk. Some might not like the tire tread patterning, or the rubber texture, but it's available in pink, white and black for both the CDMA and GSM variants of the iPhone 4 from US$29.95 and makes a decent everyday case.

Element Case Formula 4 covers your iPhone 4 in style

Element Case Formula 4

Element Case, the folks that brought you the Vapor aluminium iPhone 4 bumper, have released a polycarbonate case built around a similar design aesthetic.

The Formula 4 features the same shaped iPhone 4 edge-banding that the gorgeous Vapor uses and adds a protective back-plate that's covered in a sheet of carbon fibre. The top and bottom edges bulge out slightly, while the right-hand edge features a rubber Element Case branded grip strip.

The case is split into two halves. A top half that slides on and is most of the case. The removable bottom half slides off to let you dock your iPhone 4. When in use, the bottom half locks into place solidly and overlaps the top half just slightly, ensuring a good fit.

Formula 4 bottom unlocked

The Formula 4 encases the iPhone completely while the camera, headphones port, volume buttons, mute switch, the dock connecter, power button and speakers remain accessible. The screen itself is left completely uncovered, however, with the case providing only a very slightly raised edge. If you want screen protection you'll have to invest in a screen protector or look elsewhere.

Verdict

Overall, the Element Case Formula 4 provides good looking, decent protection for the sides and back of your iPhone 4. It's not the thinnest of cases, with extra bulges at the top and bottom of the case, but it has decent ergonomics and doesn't add too much to the depth of the device.

If you fancied the Vapor, but couldn't justify the price or were worried about the aluminium affecting signal strength, then you won't be disappointed with the Formula 4. It combines decent protection and solid design, which makes it a winner in my book.

The Element Case Formula 4 is available for US$59.95 plus shipping.

Automatic Downloads now live for iOS devices

Posted on June 6, 2011 by Samuel Gibbs.
Categories: Uncategorized.

WWDC has just kicked off for 2011, but you can get a little bit of the Apple iCloud newness right now in the form of automatic Application, Music and Book downloads.

Launch Settings on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, scroll down to Store and wait for the new options to load (you'll need to be connected to the Internet to see them). Once you've checked them, the next time you purchase or download an app, a music track or a book, it'll automatically be pushed out to any device you've activated Automatic Downloads on. Brilliant.

Be warned though, if you activate Automatic Downloads for one Apple ID on a device and then attempt to activate another Apple ID on the same device (US and UK iTunes accounts for instance), you'll get a pop-up notification saying:

This Device Is Already Associated With an Apple ID.

If you turn on Automatic Downloads with your Apple ID, you cannot auto-download or download past purchases with a different Apple ID for 90 days.

A screenshot of said warning is past the break. You have been warned.

iTunes moves to the iCloud, re-download of purchases now possible

Posted on by Samuel Gibbs.

Apple announced iCloud today at WWDC and with it the ability to re-download your previously purchased music. Re-downloading of 256 Kbps AAC tracks is now possible for the first time from iTunes, meaning that you can purchase your music once and download it to every device you own (up to 10 devices total), without any additional charge. Like apps and books, music also doesn't count against your 5 GB iCloud storage space.

You simply search through your purchased music in iTunes and hit that cute little cloud icon to initiate the download.

What's more, Apple has included Automatic Downloads for iOS into the mix meaning that free and purchased music will automatically pushed on any device you have connected to the Internet. Buy it on your iPhone and have it pushed to your iPad. Simple.

We'll be going in-depth into the new iTunes Match subscription service in a few minutes.

Maps+ adds tracking and location-based alarms to Google Maps

Maps+ for iPhone and iPad

Maps+, a new mapping app for the iPhone and iPad, has just been released. Developed by IZE, Maps+ uses Google Maps data, meaning you must have a data connection for it to work, but it adds a couple of interesting location-based features into a customizable interface that you can't get in the default iOS maps app.

GPS tracking has been added, meaning you can record your route, whether you're running, cycling, driving or walking. Sounds familiar, but this time it's opt-in. You can even import or export your recorded tracks to GPX for viewing on the desktop or in other apps.

Location-based alarms are also included, allowing you to set a reminder that's activated when you hit a certain location. That's handy if you're a bit forgetful and need more than just a timed alarm to jog your memory.

Maps+ also comes with most of the standard features found in Google Maps, including directions with route alternatives; standard, satellite, hybrid and even terrain maps from Google; and bookmarks and address-only search (no business search is included).

Maps+ is free to download, with a couple of features, such as pins, bookmarks and tracks, being limited by number. They can be unlocked via a US$2.99 in-app purchase. If the default Google Maps-based app is just a bit limited for you, then the free Maps+ is worth a look.

Biometric face recognition for jailbroken iPhones with RecognizeMe

Posted on May 18, 2011 by Samuel Gibbs.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Have you ever wished your iPhone 4 would recognize your face and let you past the lock screen? RecognizeMe, a facial recognition lock screen tweak for the jailbroken iPhone 4, does just that.

Simply hit the RecognizeMe button on the lock screen and let the phone scan your face using the front facing camera. The app can be trained to recognize your ugly mug, while the threshold for a match is adjustable. If RecognizeMe confirms your identity, it'll unlock your iPhone. If a match isn't found, it'll prompt you to enter your password, so at least you can't be locked out of your phone if you haven't shaved this morning or (gasp!) this month.

There are drawbacks to RecognizeMe, however. One is that it takes time to scan your face -- long enough that it would have been quicker to enter in your PIN or password manually. Secondly, it should also work off a 2D image, which means anyone with a photo of you can trick it into unlocking your iPhone. Still, it's a novelty that could be useful, and it's certainly something we'll want to see more of going forward.

RecognizeMe will be available for purchase in the Cydia store soon (it wasn't available at the time of writing) for a launch price of US$6.99. Read on for a video of the app in action.

Amazon Cloud Player now streams music on the iPhone and iPad

Posted on May 9, 2011 by Samuel Gibbs.

Amazon Cloud Player

We're not sure how long this has been possible, but at launch, Amazon's Cloud Player refused to stream songs from your Cloud Drive in Mobile Safari, with the only alternative being selecting 'Download' instead of play. Now Amazon has quietly flicked the switch that allows Cloud Player to work properly in Mobile Safari, once you get past the "Your browser isn't supported screen," complete with background playback and control, meaning that you can pause the music and skip tracks right from the multitasking bar.

If you haven't tried Amazon's Cloud Player, and you've got an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, perhaps now's the time to give it a test drive. You get 5 GB of free storage up front, and you can upload and stream any tracks you already have with it. Anything purchased from the Amazon MP3 store can be automatically added to your Cloud Drive without counting against your storage quota. What's more, Amazon will give you an extra 15 GB of free storage when you purchase at least one MP3 album, bringing your storage limit up to 20 GB.

While any web app implementation isn't going to be as good as a really great native app, using the Cloud Player in Mobile Safari with background playback and control isn't a bad option at all -- plus it works outside the US, too.

Cydia Search lets you search for jailbreak apps from your desktop

Cydia Search

Searching for the perfect Jailbreak app in Cydia on the iPhone can be a frustratingly slow experience. Cydia Search from Planet-iPhones.com eases your pain by allowing you to browse through the plethora of Cydia apps by category, repository or author, all from the comfort of a desktop browser. If you know what you're looking for, you can search by name, description, author, version number or one of the many other search filters, which should make short work of finding what you're looking for.

Once you've located a package you're interested in, you can check out who wrote it, the price, the current version, which repository it's stored on, as well as view the actual Cydia entry as it would appear on an iPhone. While this isn't the first implementation of a desktop Cydia interface -- ModMyi also provides a searchable front end for Cydia on the desktop -- Cydia Search provides a fast, slick experience that's well worth checking out.

It's great for those people sitting on the fence as to whether or not they want to jailbreak their iDevice since it allows them to view all the programs, add-ons, tweaks and themes before they take the plunge. Likewise, if you're looking for a new app or update, Cydia Search will allow you to find what you're looking for before you head to Cydia on your device to download it.

Verizon iPhone untethered jailbreak now available for iOS 4.2.7

Verizon iPhone untether

While GSM-iPhone owners have had the pleasure of an untethered jailbreak for the latest iOS iteration, 4.3.2, Verizon CDMA-iPhone owners haven't been so lucky -- until now.

Sn0wbreeze 2.6.1, a Windows-only utility brought to you by the folks from iH8sn0w, is now able to install an untethered jailbreak for the Verizon iPhone running iOS 4.2.7. But what about all those Mac-owning Verizon iPhone users who want in on the untethered action?

No problem -- simply jailbreak with redsn0w as per normal, then head to Cydia and install the Verizon Untether for 4.2.7 from the http://cydia.pushfix.info repo. Quick, simple and now without the need to connect to your computer to reboot.

Install and run iPad apps on an iPhone easily with iTelePad2Pod

iTelePad2Pod

OK, so this comes straight out of the why would you want to do this category, but thanks to the iSmooth Project folks from iJailbreakNow, installing and running iPad-only apps is now possible for the less tech-savvy on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch.

The process involves using an app called iTelePad2Pod on your Mac to alter the supported devices metadata of your target iPad app. The modified app is then sent to your iPhone or iPod touch using FTP across OpenSSH (which must be installed on your jailbroken device). It's a fairly straightforward procedure and results in some relatively usable apps. This isn't the first time an iPad app has been installed on an iPhone, the once iPad-only Netflix app had that pleasure courtesy of some clever hackery.

These apps are designed for the larger display of the iPad and users may encounter a problem when a button or dialog breaches the bounds of the iPhone's resolution (960x640 for the iPhone 4). If there's an app that's only available for the iPad and you haven't jumped on the tablet bandwagon yet, you now have a relatively user-friendly option. Read on for a video guide.

Untrackerd wipes stored location data on your jailbroken iPhone

Posted on April 21, 2011 by Samuel Gibbs.
Categories: Uncategorized.

The iPhone and iPad seem to be storing location data about your travels using cell tower information. Whether you believe that Apple is secretly spying on you or just storing the locations of cell towers for some purpose, such as speedier connections to said towers, if you don't like it, you now have an option. Ryan Petrich, a renowned jailbreak app developer, has released a free little utility called "untrackerd" that runs in the background and continuously cleans stored location history data.

You will, of course, have to have a jailbroken iPhone or iPad to install the app from Cydia, but if you're not happy about the possibility of your iPhone or iPad's location history being accessible, then head to Cydia now and install the 37 KB app from the BigBoss repository for peace of mind.

Tenuous rumor pegs iPad 3 CPU as a dual-core 2GHz part

Posted on April 20, 2011 by Samuel Gibbs.
Categories: Uncategorized.

Apple A6Treat this one as pure speculation, because frankly, that's what it is. A "high-ranking official" at Samsung let slip that the company is "planning to release a 2GHz dual-core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year." This means that Samsung, one of the world's biggest chip manufacturers and a significant Apple supplier, will be pushing out a new, likely ARM-based, 2GHz dual-core processor in the near future.

The speculation is that, since Samsung manufactures Apple's A4 and A5 processors, which are powering the current crop of iDevices (regardless of present litigation), there's potential for a new Apple-branded processor -- the A6 if you like -- based on the 2GHz dual-core chip. The current Cortex-A9-based Apple A5 sports a dual-core 1GHz configuration, so frankly, a 2GHz variant isn't too much of a stretch, but who knows. The iPad 2 clips along at a lightning pace with its current A5; an iPad 3 sporting a dual-core 2GHz chip that has "the data processing capabilities of a regular PC, " is mighty enticing. Just don't mention battery life.

F1 timing app 2011 for iPhone and iPad

Formula 1 has always been the pinnacle of the FIA's motor racing roster. It's the most technologically advanced motor racing championship on Earth, with the teams and drivers pushing their cars to the absolute limit every time they hit the track.

Everything on the cars is monitored remotely via a wireless data link; Formula 1 isn't a solo effort by the racing driver by any stretch of the imagination, it's most certainly a team game. From sector split times to track position, the amount of G experienced in the corners to the tire pressure and brake temperature, the team monitors it all from the pit lane wall and in the garage.

But what about the fans? How can they get a bigger slice of the data-pie when it comes to the race? That's where the officially licensed, universal Formula 1 Timing App 2011 for iOS comes in.
