Carriers accept high iPhone subsidies for now

It's widely believed that US carriers pay a lot for the iPhone. A perfect example is Sprint which signed an estimated US$15 billion deal for the iPhone and won't make money off the handset until 2015. AllThingsD presents several compelling reasons why Sprint and other US wireless carriers are willing to accept such high subsidies for the iPhone.

First, the carriers believe the iPhone will help them attract customers and keep them for the long term. Second, the carriers won't stop selling the iPhone now because they want to capitalize on the demand for the LTE iPhone which may arrive as early this year. Third and final, each carrier signed a multiyear agreement with Apple and can't change the subsidy terms until they've rode out the contract.

How to take fantastic photos of your kids with your iPhone

How to take great photos of your kids with your iPhone

If you have children, you probably take more photos of them with your iPhone than anything else. We've already taken a look at how to take great portraits with your iPhone, and everything from that article applies here as well. We'll re-iterate some of them here, like light, camera level, and catchlights. But when it comes to taking the absolute best possible iPhone photos of your little ones, there are some other things we need to pay attention to as well.

Find light

How to take great photos of your kids with your iPhone

The most important element of any photograph is light

I know I say this in every photography article I write, but that's because it really is that important. You need light. And it's especially important with kids because they move. A lot.

Quick mini-lesson about cameras

In order for a camera to capture an image, it needs light. To get light, the camera opens a hole, called an aperture, in the lens and releases the shutter, which allows light to hit the sensor for a set amount of time. A larger aperture means more light (because more light is coming in at once), and a slower shutter speed also means more light (because light is passing through the aperture for a longer period of time).

"But this is an iPhone, not a DSLR where I can control these settings. Why do I need to know this?" Because understanding how the camera works and why you're getting the results that you are will help you make decisions to improve. And for children, the biggest challenge is movement, which is why taking photos in a well lit environment is critical.

You see, kids move. Some of them nonstop (like my daughter). So there's a good chance you're struggling with blurry photos. The reason for this is because the shutter isn't moving fast enough to freeze the motion. But now that we know that the shutter will move slower to allow more light, it must also be true that if we have more light, the shutter will be faster. This is why more light is better with children -- you have a greater chance of freezing their motion with a fast shutter.

To summarize, because of the limitations of the iPhone, there's only two pieces of advice I can offer to solve blurry motion photos: get your child to stop moving (very difficult, but the right distraction can do it), or take your child somewhere where there's a lot of light.

Get down to their level

How to take great photos of your kids with your iPhone

Getting down to your child's level will provide better results.

One of the simplest things you can do that will drastically improve you photos is too get down to the eye-level of the child you're photographing. This may mean squatting, getting on your knees, or for the real little ones, laying on your belly.

Remember, though, that rules are meant be broken. If done right, photos shot from above or below your child can come out rather stunning (like having your child lay on their back and you shoot from directly above).

Posing tips

How to take great photos of your kids with your iPhone

Posing kids is hard, especially your own kids. Here's a few ideas that might help. The main thing is to get creative -- telling a child (or anyone for that matter) to smile isn't going to result in a nice natural smile.

  • Bribe them with candy or toys
  • Do something fun, like tickling, while your camera is ready, then back off real quick and take the shot
  • Ask them to face away from you and, on the count of three, to spin around and give you their best pose
  • Have them run towards you (perhaps with someone chasing them)

For younger toddlers and babies who don't understand commands, try some of these tips.

  • Play peak-a-boo behind your iPhone. Maybe even have a stuffed animal play peek-a-boo behind your iPhone
  • Find something that makes a noise they've never heard before. Maybe a new toy, maybe a new ringtone, maybe some other random noise you can produce yourself. Hold this item at camera level, not way above your head. You want the child looking into the camera.
  • Make animal sounds
  • Make a complete and utter fool of yourself by running, jumping, and dancing around and making high pitched sounds. No, seriously.

Use the front-facing camera

How to take great photos of your kids with your iPhone

Using the front-facing camera can result in genuine smiles and funny faces

I know, the front-facing isn't nearly as good as the rear-facing camera, but for babies and toddlers, when they see themselves on the screen, they can't help but smile or make faces. So although these photos may not be of the highest quality, they should still result in some fun memories.

Also, if you're the only who's always taking the photos, the front-facing camera is a great way to get some photos of you with your child.

Catchlights

How to take great photos of your kids with your iPhone

You child's eyes will stand out with catchlights.

Ever notice that in some photos of kids, the child's eyes stand out more than in other photos? Sometimes there is some post-processing involved, but most of the time it was just clever placement of lighting -- and it's so simple. To make your child's eyes stand out, you need catchlights. If you're seeking out good light sources, this will actually happen naturally. The trick to catchlights is to make sure that your light source is hitting your child's eyes. That's it.

Sometimes it's OK to use the flash

How to take great photos of your kids with your iPhone

Although you shouldn't use it often, sometimes using the iPhone's flash is the only way to capture a memory

I have a secret. I hate the iPhone's flash. It's terrible. In fact, the flash on most cameras are terrible. On-camera flashes do give much needed light, but they usually also result in very flat, unflattering images. So my first recommendation is to avoid the iPhone's flash at all costs. Especially with children -- the flash is so slow, that by the time the picture is taken, the moment is lost.

But sometimes there is no other choice, like in the photo above. I found my daughter sleeping in her crib like this and so badly wanted a photo. To get a "good" photo, though, I would need to turn on the light, but that would wake her up. I'm all for doing whatever I have to do to get a great shot -- except when that something is waking up my daughter. So my only choice was to turn on my iPhone's flash. It's not the greatest photo in the world, but it's an awesome memory. And with our kids -- that's really what it's all about. Memories.

Now go out and shoot!

So now that you're equipped with some tips for getting great photos of your kids, go out and practice! With summer just around the corner, you can bet that you'll be taking even more photos of your kids. As always, please share your favorite photos with us in the iMore photography forum. (Please do not share photos of someone else's child without permission from the parents). Have fun!

The cost and construction of Apple’s iPhone charger

Posted on by Steven Sande.

Image

Have you ever wondered exactly why Apple's tiny USB Power Adapter for the iPhone has such a large price tag? The diminutive cube costs US$29.00, while similar USB wall chargers are available from retailers like Monoprice for as little as $6. Ken Shirriff wondered the same thing, so he went all iFixit on one of the Apple chargers and tore it to pieces to see what's inside.

Shirriff found that there's a reason for at least part of the premium price tag, and that's the use of quality components. To quote Shirriff's conclusions,

Apple's power adapter is clearly a high-quality power supply designed to produce carefully filtered power. Apple has obviously gone to extra effort to reduce EMI interference, probably to keep the charger from interfering with the touchscreen. When I opened the charger up, I expected to find a standard design, but I've compared the charger to the Samsung charger and several other high-quality industry designs, and Apple goes beyond these designs in several ways...

Apple's design provides extra safety in a few ways... the super-strong AC prongs, and the complex over-temperature / over-voltage shutdown circuit. Apple's isolation distance between primary and secondary appears to go beyond the regulations...

Apple's iPhone charger crams a lot of technology into a small space. Apple went to extra effort to provide higher quality and safety than other name-brand chargers, but this quality comes at a high cost.

So that's it, then. The next time you walk into an Apple Store to replace the USB Power Adapter that the child flushed down the toilet, you can walk out with adaptor in hand and hold your head up high, for you've bought quality merchandise.

New Jersey considering lawsuit again woman who texted her boyfriend prior to motor vehiculeaccident

New Jersey considering lawsuit again woman who texted her boyfriend prior to motor vehiculeaccident

A Superior Court judge in Morristown, New Jersey is considering whether or not a woman who knowingly texted her boyfriend, while he was driving, and who ultimately crashed into a couple on a motorcycle, can be held responsible in civil court.

According to the report, the 18 year old driver was "glancing" at texts from his girlfriend when he crossed traffic and hit two motorcyclists. The driver plead guilty to using his cellphone while driving, was fined $775, and has to make speeches about the dangers of texting and driving, which is illegal in the state of New Jersey.

The motorcyclists are suing the driver, but are also seeking to have his girlfriend added to the suit as well. Their attorney told The New York Post:

“If you know somebody is operating a motor vehicle, if you know it is illegal to text and drive because it violates the law, if you know it’s dangerous, if you know all this and knowingly send a text, then a jury should decide.”

The girlfriend's attorney told The Daily Record that it's not fair or reasonable, and that the girlfriend has no way to control when her boyfriend is going to read her messages.

A decision is expected May 25.

Now, I'm not an attorney, I do not play one on this blog, and I know next to nothing about contributory negligence, but there does not appear to be any precedence to this case the way there is to drinking and driving cases, for example.

The laws surrounded distracted driving are also patchwork. They often target specific items, like phones, instead of general principles. Putting on makeup. Reading newspapers. Drinking and eating. Changing radio stations. Focusing on GPS. Looking at expensive cars. Staring at scantily clad humans.

Conversely, new technologies are emerging that allow for different ways to interact with mobile devices. Chief among them, Siri. With Siri, instead of staring and typing, you can do more listening and talking. You can hear SMS and dictate responses. When it works.

All of this raises a lot of questions. Should there be specific laws against texting, or should there be more general laws against distracted driving? If there are always against texting, should new interfaces like Siri be exempt? Is having a conversation on the phone, or with Siri, different than having a conversation with a passenger who could, theoretically serve as a second set of eyes on the road?

And if something like texting while driving is illegal, and someone knows you're driving and keeps texting you, should they bear some of the responsibility if an accident occurs?

Apple files to ban Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in U.S.

Apple files to ban Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in U.S.

Late last week Apple filed a preliminary injunction against Samsung's flagship tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. The move comes shortly after an appeal which partially confirmed that Apple's design patent infringement complaint was valid. This might put just a slight damper on the settlement talks Apple and Samsung had scheduled for today. Apple proposed to give Samsung until May 25 (this Friday) to respond.

Such a ban might sting Samsung a bit, but they've dealt with a similar ban in Germany by offering a slight a redesign of the Galaxy Tab 10.1; even if such a ban comes quickly to the U.S., Samsung already has a contingency in place to put their Android tablet back on store shelves. We've seen a lot of this kind of activity on the smartphone side of things lately;  HTC was recently hit with a similar ban from Apple, and Apple might not even have to do anything to get Motorola phones off the U.S. market, since some of them are facing a ban after an ITC ruling in a patent case against Microsoft.

Although the iPad still dominates the tablet market, it's been gradually losing market share as a multitude of Android tablets have begun coming out of the woodwork. By attacking on legal fronts, Apple is at least delaying the competition's progress, if not securing its lead for the long-term. I'm not worried that Android's going to beat out Apple overnight, especially given the sky-high customer satisfaction of iOS devices, but it's hard to imagine how the current iPad will manage to stick out to consumers when surrounded by so many lower end, cheaper alternatives. (As to the 7-inch iPad, well, that's still a rumor for now...)

What do you think - does Apple need to litigate to keep the iPad in the lead, or is this just one of the many steps needed to take to kill and bury Android?

Comcast officially launches next-gen X1 DVR platform and iPhone remote app

As expected, Comcast is kicking off the rollout of its new X1 (previously beta tested under the name Xcalibur) DVR platform. The announcement was made at the Cable Show in Boston, and that's where it will be available first, some time in "the coming weeks" with a few other major markets following soon after. We've had a few peeks at the new UI over the last year or so but now we have a full gallery of shots of both the DVR software and accompanying X1 remote app that will be available first on the iPhone. The new guide looks very similar to the existing Xfinity TV remote apps for phones and tablets, formatted for HD screens and with support for recommendations from your social network and support for apps like weather, TV, traffic, Facebook and Pandora to start. The new set-top boxes it runs on have built-in tru2way and internet support, as well as RF remotes instead of IR.

Meanwhile, the X1 remote control app adds motion and gesture control to the current set of features, as well as more direct interaction with what's on screen, since it can be used to swipe through pages, type into menus and pause currently video with a shake. As far as pricing, Comcast says it will be available to new Triple Play customers with HD/DVR service at no additional cost -- no word yet on what that means for everyone else. Check the gallery below for a look at the new software, and check the press release after the break for more info.

When is the iPhone 5 coming out?

When is the iPhone 5 coming out?

The release date for when the iPhone 5 comes out is the most frequent question we're being asked these days. That makes sense -- some people might need a new phone and don't want to get the current iPhone 4S if the next generation iPhone 5 (or whatever Apple decides to call it) is right around the corner. Others see competing phones like the Nokia Lumia 900, HTC One X, and Samsung Galaxy S III and want to see Apple's answer sooner rather than later. Still others always want the new stuff now, now, now. The day after Apple releases the iPhone 5, they'll want the iPhone 5S. That's just how it goes.

Past behavior

Apple, of course, hasn't even announced a next generation iPhone yet, much less the release date. If we use past behavior as the best indicator of future behavior, than for the first four years of the iPhone's existence, Apple announced the release dates at their annual World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) and shipped shortly thereafter. The original iPhone shipped on June 29, 2007. The iPhone 3G on July 11, 2008. The iPhone 3GS shipped on June 8, 2009. The iPhone 4 shipped on June 24, 2010.

And then everything changed.

Pattern breaks

First, the Verizon iPhone was launched on February 10, 2011. Then WWDC 2011 came and went without a new iPhone announcement. Last year's iPhone 4S wasn't announced until October, and didn't launch until October 14, 2011.

Many of the readers, listeners, and viewers asking us when the iPhone 5 is coming out are hoping 2011 was an anomaly or outlier, that the Verizon launch somehow causes a momentary blip in time and space, and that this year everything will return to "normal" and we'll somehow get a WWDC 2012 iPhone 5 announcement and June release date again.

The new normal

While it's impossible to rule anything out 100%, a June 2012 iPhone 5 release doesn't seem likely. First, it would be quite early in the product cycle to replace the iPhone 4S. While it took 16 months to go from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S, reverting to a June release for the iPhone 5 means the iPhone 4S would only enjoy 9 months in the top spot.

Also, all those previous summer iPhone launches were preceded by spring iOS developer events where new versions of iOS were shown off. Last year's fall iPhone release didn't have a special spring developer release. iOS 5 was announced at WWDC 2011.

Likewise, Apple didn't have an iOS 6 developer event last spring either. Unless Apple doesn't plan on releasing a new version of iOS 6 this year, which seems unlikely, that leaves WWDC 2012 as the next venue where it could be introduced. If Apple is only going to show off the iOS 6 beta in June, that leaves little hope that the final version running on the iPhone 5 will be released any time before the fall.

Last year, the iPhone took the place of the iPod as Apple's big holiday release. Apple didn't even announce next generation iPods during their traditional fall event, just paint jobs. It was all iPhone. And given how important the holiday quarter is to Apple, that doesn't seem likely to change.

So when is the iPhone 5 coming out already?

iMore has heard that no new iOS devices will be announced at WWDC and that Apple is currently planning to once again release the next generation iPhone in the fall.

Based on everything we've heard, and everything we've seen so far, October 2012 is when iPhone 5 is coming out.

Report: Foxconn spending $210 million on Apple production line

China Daily is claiming that Foxconn will pump $210 million into building a production line in China's Jiangsu province. Local authorities have stated that the plant in Huai'an city will produce components for Apple, no doubt heralding a raft of rampant speculation as to Cupertino's intentions. The building will occupy 40,000 square meters, produce $1.1 billion worth of gear per year and require 35,800 employees -- more than Nokia and Sony have fired in recent months, combined.

Tim Cook and Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung Meeting Today to Discuss Patent Issues

Posted on by Eric Slivka.
Categories: Uncategorized.
Following last month's announcement that Apple and Samsung had agreed to high-level talks involving the two companies' CEOs in an attempt to resolve ongoing patent litigation, Reuters provides a preview of the session set to begin today in San Francisco. The talks, which will be mediated by a federal judge, are scheduled to take place over the next two days.

Commenting before his departure to the United States for the talks, Samsung mobile division chief JK Shin noted that while significant differences between Apple and Samsung still exist, a number of "negotiation options" remain on the table.
"There is still a big gap in the patent war with Apple," JK Shin said, before departing for the United States for the mediation talks. "But we still have several negotiation options."

Court documents show the two companies have had at least one mediation session, although it is not clear if Cook and Choi were involved.
Legal experts are not optimistic that the two companies will reach a settlement, but with courts increasingly pushing companies to seek alternative dispute resolution processes in hopes of staving off drawn-out court battles, Apple and Samsung have agreed to participate in the talks.

Samsung is just one of Apple's main targets in its patent battles with Android-based hardware manufacturers. In another case, Apple succeeded in slowing U.S. imports of several HTC smartphones earlier this month, forcing the company to delay the launch of the Evo 4G LTE on Sprint although HTC has indicated that some shipments of some models are being released by U.S. Customs.

But while Apple's disputes with several Android device manufacturers center on functionality of the devices, the company's dispute with Samsung extends further to claims that Samsung has "chosen to slavishly copy" the design of Apple's products with its own line of Galaxy smartphones and tablets.

Foxconn Building New $210 Million Production Line for Apple Products

Posted on by Eric Slivka.
Categories: Uncategorized.
China Daily reports that Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn continues to expand its operations in support of Apple's strong growth in product sales, investing $210 million to build a new production line for unspecified components. The new production line is said to be set to come on line in October of this year and will be located in the Chinese city of Huai'an in the eastern province of Jiangsu.
The plant, covering an area of 40,000 square meters, plans to hire 35,800 employees.

The annual output value of the plant is expected to reach 6 to 7 billion yuan ($949 million to $1.1 billion), and the import and export value will be $55.8 million, the office said.
Foxconn, which has come under scrutiny regarding workers rights issues and has recently been working with Apple to monitor issues and improve standards, has been aggressively expanding its facilities to support Apple's production needs. In addition to new production facilities for the iPhone and iPad in Brazil, the company has also recently adopted a strategy of decentralizing its Chinese production facilities, building some of its new plants in interior regions closer to the homes of many of the young workers seeking jobs with the company.

It is unclear what role the forthcoming Huai'an facility will play in the production of Apple devices, and while the addition of nearly 36,000 workers marks a substantial investment in new production for Apple, it will represent only a small fraction of Foxconn's overall workforce, which currently includes well over one million employees.

Daily iPhone App: Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 2 brings Sonic back again

Posted on by Mike Schramm.

The big question with Sonic games is always if it's as good as the old titles on the Sega Genesis and the Dreamcast, and as usual, the answer here with Sonic 4 Episode 2 (yes, that's how they're releasing these) is unfortunately no. But that's not really a bad thing -- this is pretty good 2D Sonic, put together with quality graphics and plenty of content to play through. It won't compare to the old titles (because what does, really?), but if you're just looking for Sonic and Tails to run around in a colorful world, you'll get it here.

Yes, Tails is back in this one, and he and Sonic team up to run, do a little flying, and race through lots and lots of levels together. You can even hook up with two players over Bluetooth, one on Sonic and the other on Tails. Just like the last Sonic on iOS, the proceedings are plenty colorful, varied from stage to stage, and while the controls are only virtual (actually, iCade compatibility would be a nice bonus here), they work about as well as virtual controls can.

Sonic 4 Episode 2 isn't a bad game at all, though like all of the other Sonic titles out there, it probably won't live up to your memories of what the series once was. If you want old school Sonic action, and wouldn't mind seeing Tails in 2D after quite a while away, the game's available for $6.99 in a universal version right now.

Verizon not closing unlimited plans yet, but still trying to transition customers away

Posted on by Mike Schramm.

We reported that Verizon was going to shut down unlimited data plans when customers purchased new phones and shared data plans were available. The company now says that while it does want to try and phase unlimited data plans out, there will still be options for customers currently under unlimited plans who are aiming to buy new phones.

Basically, if you want to be eligible for a discount on a new phone, Verizon is going to try to sell you on switching off from the unlimited plan, over to something that helps the company budget data more easily (not to mention opens you up to extra fees, if you happen to go over your data cap). Customers who currently have unlimited plans and pay full price for a new phone, will get the reward of keeping their unlimited plans for the foreseeable future. Those of you willing to pay won't have to worry.

I personally have an unlimited data plan with AT&T, and it's been more than worth it, given all of the browsing, sharing, and reading I do on my iPhone. I can see why companies would rather get their customers on more budgeted plans, but as a customer, I'd much rather pay for unlimited service than have to worry about how much data I'm using all the time.
